hi all,

i have a weil mcclain ultra oil boiler with a beckett burner and an ergomax indirect water heater. in the past 80 days, the heat was never on so the boiler was only used to heat my hot water. i just had my oil tank filled up and it used 118 gallon of oil in the past 80 days. so that's roughly 1.47 gallon of oil used just to heat the water every day. that's very high, isn't it?

my questions are:

1. if i set the aquastat on the ergomax indirect water heater and the thermostat on the boiler down, would it be enough to receive the oil consumption significantly?

2. is it worth installing a heat pump electric water heater (e.g. GE geospring) to eliminate the usage of the boiler during non-heating season? i pay $0.17 per kwh

3. if i get a wood stove fireplace insert or a standalone wood stove to heat the home during winter along with the heat pump electric water heater, i could potentially get rid of my oil boiler and oil tank altogether, is it doable?

thanks,
m

My friend switched from his oil burner plus superstor to a geospring and saved 150 gallons during the summer. As an added bonus the dehumidifier runs half as much

I installed a geospring to replace my normal electric heater and my electric bill dropped $30-40 a month.

Check the green room for a bunch of threads where members are reporting on their installs

thanks for the info, i will check out the threads in the green room.

So you burned 1.5 gallons per day, let's say 5 bucks worth. That is like 30 kwh per day for just hot water. My whole house, including heating water for a family of four with a regular electric water heater uses less than 15 kwh per day in the summer.

You don't need to get fancy, a plain Jane resistance electric water heater will quickly pay for itself and could be plumbed to be heated with oil or with electricity.
