So a guy in town said he has dry wood from a blowdown, not!

So even though I'm not looking for any wood I said that I wanted to test some of it with my meter. He said that's fine but he KNOWS it's dry! He can just tell! Well I tested fresh splits at 48% and days old cuts at 36%. He wants to sell the wood and I know he wants to say it's dry but maybe he will do the right thing and say it needs time to dry.

Sounds like almost every advertiser of seasoned wood here in the Southern part of the state. Like I say the only seasoning it has seen is that of bar oil and 2 stroke exhaust for at least 90% of the sellers. I do not normally sell firewood, might have to this year things are tight, and from what I can tell ( meter wise on what I have checked) my stacks are around the 20% mark on average. Most of this is split and stacked 2 years- bad drying season this summer though - very high humidity and not all that hot like the couple previous summers - partly due to the way my place is laid out as well, air flow isn't too bad but sun is at a premium unless I stack out in the middle of the open areas which would incur the wrath of the city. my place already the neighborhood buzz - crazy guy with all that wood. Neighbor made a comment last Tue. evening as I was coming home with a small load from a renewed old source, same old comment - same reply -never enough and that my fall through spring utility bills are under a c note. If you have WE energies as a utility that is a major accomplishment.

Alawys cracks me up when someone comments on "enough wood"......huh, wait till it gets cold out, and they lose power for a few days after a storm......yeah, enough wood

My BIL has been selling wood for over 30 years, he gives a solid cord for a good price and has always had more business than he could handle. Now that's he's older he wanted to work less and get paid more so he crossed over to the dark side. He's now only selling what he calls "dry wood". So I had to ask how he's seasoning this wood to get more money and I got the same answer I get from all the others, he cuts the tree down and piles them up and lets them sit for a few months, then cuts and splits to order. I asked if he ever tested a split with this method because in my experience it's still wet. He said he knows its still a little wet but will dry a lot more quickly and in time for them to burn this year. I foresee a lot of customer complaints this year in his new endeavor.

A guy I bought wood from started doing that last year too. He burned a few customers and lost some last year. No es bueno.

I know it can be a touchy situation, but sometimes you just have to tell your relatives that they suck. ;lol

Since he said it was his BIL (emphasis on "in law"), I'm sure he'd have a cold winter if he said that despite his pile of firewood. The boss may be kicking him out the door! :)

There's only so much "dry" wood available. If they're a busy place eventually they're selling green or 1 year old wood at best.

Last time I got that "Think you have enough firewood, heh heh?" crack from a neighbor was about three years ago -- and guess what, all of that wood is gone now.

So, apparently it wasn't enough.
