A friend is interested in a new wood stove with a cooktop for when the power is out. Any suggestions? I know the Pacific Energy Alderlea T4, T5 and T6 have this option as well as the Harman Oakwood I believe that's what it's called.

Thanks!!

The Progress Hybrid has a cooktop. We love the stove.

There's quite a few, my Progress Hybrid has a cook top (look at my avatar) and I believe the new Ideal Steel does too.

The Quad Isle Royale has a "cook top" on it with a grease ring. I have yet to attempt it. When it comes from the factory it has an oil film on it to season it.

I take that back. I made stew in the Dutch oven with elk on the top. Was pretty tasty.

Lots of stoves can be cooked on. The Alderlea is nice because one can vary the temp depending on whether is in direct contact with the stovetop or on the trivet. The Napoleon 1150p is designed for cooking. Even cooler is the Esse Ironheart.

We installed one of Esse's actual cookstoves it is a beautiful unit and works really well but wow a lot of money and heavy as hell. Havnt seen the iron heart in person but judging by what we saw in there other product i am sure it is very good

My Jotul Rangeley has a machined top for something to sit perfectly on it and cook. Also as a top load (And front), there is a drop in grille accessory that allows you to grill in the stove too. Pretty cool (and one of the reasons I bought this stove).

Sounds like a neat stove!! How much does the Jotul Rangeley run retail typically?

Thanks!!

As has been said above, you can cook on darn near any stove with a flat top in a pinch. I (mostly my wife) was also interested in that feature when we were looking.

If your're only interested in the occasional power outage, I would not make cooking features a big priority in selecting a stove for normal use since any stove with a flat surface can do just fine in an emergency.

There are other features to consider that may be more important to your friends's situation. We've cooked on our PE Super 27 and it does well.

But I do like the features of PE's Alderlea series and they are nice stoves in general.

Three different spots, three different temperatures for cooking.

I think you can cook on any woodstove provided you're using a pot or skillet. I cook on my Fireview often enough. I have a steamer sitting on a cast iron trivet, I just remove the steamer and put a pot there. Works great for winter power outages....or just for the fun of it.

You can melt snow/boil water to make it safe to drink on almost any stove on the market. That's all that matters. You can go a month without food, and I would bet the average, overstuffed American can go about double that. You'll be just fine on water and pb and j for a few days while the power is out. At least you won't have to expend as many calories as your neighbors who are sitting in the cold.

I've got a Quadrafire Isle Royale, too, and love to cook on it. I use pans, though, never cooked on it straight out except for toast.

Man, that grill on the top looks really nice, though! :)

This is the one we installed it is by far the best cook stove i have ever seen. It has a cat right under one of the burner plates and that side gets really hot when the cat is active. And yes the clearances are that close but it is not ul listed so we had to install it like an unlisted stove which is a shame. Esse is supposedly going through the testing process now though

Cooks over the fire? Way cool. I wonder how messy it gets. Hey, you gotta think about cleanup!

I have cooked rib eyes in it... and it wasnt messy at all. Sits down probably 4" from the top of the stove. A well designed product (the grill portion is stainless steel). Can't wait to figure out how to properly use it. Overcooked the rib eyes the first time haha

I hear you....but a few days with no power can be so much nicer with a little planning. Plus, with kids...keeping them fed well cuts down on the whining LOL. It's bad enough when you have no TV for a few days....I couldn't imagine them hungry on top of it. I actually keep popcorn on hand just to keep my son entertained and snacking via the wood stove when the power is gone.
