image33.jpg View attachment 143388 image.jpg Long time customer that wouldn't afford me the install called yesterday and wanted me to look at their new stove. Had a handyman install it for them but called me when it wouldn't work. She was very upset when I told her I couldn't work on it cause it was not installed right. Then....she wanted me to talk with her handyman to tell him what he did wrong so he could fix it. The nerve!

I am not even sure what I am looking at....

Is that regular galvanized duct-work piping running horizontally out the wall with no class A where is passes through?

Edit: I see that it is running vertically not horizontally....and WTF is up with the duct tape? That doesnt look like high temp silicone to me....

Was the seal on the enclosed manual still intact?:) I don't know if one should laugh or cry.

OMG:eek: I don't blame you. I would run away too. Installed like that it's a lawsuit waiting to happen. I'd hate to be a tattle tale but I think I would show that install picture to your local codes enforcement officer or the fire dept. I may save someones life.

Picture needs rotating, me thinks, unless she has those special trees that grow horizontally. :)

Some people just don't get it. She has a lot of nerve but not many brains! That even looks like a nightmare from servicing standpoint with it blocked in on 3 sides. No thank you.

Maybe trees installed by same handyman:)

The woodwork around the windows is really outstanding, too. I wonder what kind of chainsaw he uses............

NEEDS A SURGE PROTECTOR!!
Just kidding. Someone should rip it out and start over before they burn the house down.

I don't think this guy can call himself a "handy"man... What a sh!t show!!

Just noticed the laminate floor right to the stove... classy.

The really sad part is that the installation manuals are pretty in depth and have all the information you need to do a proper installation if you are even remotely handy and can read.

Well...... at least the fire dept will have easy access, being able to break all 3 windows around it, when they get called to "put the wet stuff on the hot stuff" ! :ZZZ Hey, but I guess that will just be another project for the 'handyman' to fix !

On a serious note......my FF buddies say they see this kind of stuff quite regularly, unfortunately, and tragically too often.

Call the Building Inspector or Fire Chief - the homeowner being oblivious to the risk and 'penny wise and pound foolish' on her installer choice shouldn't be the reason this poor lady should have to perish in a structure fire.

I'd say that the 'Handyman' did not read the manual, and if he did, totally ignored it !! If the owner of the said property is reading this ...... DO NOT RUN THE STOVE UNTIL IT IS INSTALLED AS PER THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THE MANUAL OR YOUR HOME WILL BECOME A PILE OF ASH !

Guy had a barber shop, charged $10 for a cut. Everybody loved how they looked when he was done. Someone new opened a shop next door with a sign that said "Haircuts $7". Some folks wondered if the established barber would lower his price to match. He didn't, and yes, he lost a few customers. But he waited a month after observing the results of his new competition. He then put up a sign that read "We fix $7.00 haircuts! $15.00" Business boomed

I read it on the intraweb, so it is a true story.

That's funny right there - until someone gets hurt. Definitely a future Darwin Award candidate!

Can anyone actually find anything the (handyman) did right with the install? LOL!!!

what's wrong with that? You can hold your hand in front of pellet stove exhaust. It doesn't get that hot!!

(just kidding of course)

That pipe doesn't even look like pellet vent pipe. Almost looks like single wall dryer vent_g Look at the sku sticker on it, I've never seen pellet vent come with that on it.

Just sad... Hopefully you warned her not to use it in it's present state of install.

scary stuff!
1. no OAK
2. no thimble in ceiling
3. no surge protector
4. no floor protection
5. stove not specifically rated for alcove install so must be 8X8X8 alcove per NFPA211 (512 CF)

no idea what kind of pipe that is, cannot see labeling and scott didnt elaborate.

i can hear the call already "i had it "professionally" installed just like the book says.

The best is when you ask a professional stove installer....well no he's a plumber but his brother-in-law's friend install one once.
