I'm running a quad 3100 and find with a top down cold start, I need to close everything down by 300-350, at least this time of year with the boxelder I'm burning. And it still climbs to a little over 700. I do have a blower on it so I can just flip that on to cool it back down. I did a reload with all oak/ash mix before bed the other night when it was suppose to get down to 17 and didn't see any temps over 600. It made it there and cruised for quite awhile.
I am renting the house and didn't want to modify the stove as I don't technically own it. I was getting nervous seeing it climb to 750 on less than prime btu wood but I think it was off gassing really soon and I wasn't closing down soon enough. I was affraid every time I use it I was going to have a runaway fire. Now I pretty much close everything down a tad before 300, before the secondaries even kick in but it climbs and they start up shortly there after. I'll see what the 24/7 burning brings. I'm sure it will be easier to control reloads than start up loads.

After I pack it full, I have primary air on lowest setting never opening it more than lowest setting and have the acc control closed (not using it) so it is burning slow then eventually gets super blazing and the temp probe in the stack gets to 900-1000

Wanted to point out that you are saying that you have the input air on its lowest setting from the start on a new load on coals.

Sounds like you have air leak some where like Matt1 is speaking about.

Did you check the gasket on the door itself? Some folks here use the dollar bill test on theirs

I am a total moron. Thank to Mattt for giving me a clue. The ash door was not closed. I don't know how I overlooked this, but I am sure it is the leak. I did not make a fire because it was too warm but I am sure this is the problem. Thanks everyone. I must say I am disappointed with Quadrafire's service they would not even talk to me.
Englander was always helpful when I had questions

Good I'm glad you found the problem. Keep in touch how things are from now on with temps and you should be able to turn your air down and get long burn times without the air coming in from the ash dump. It is a shame quadrafire does nothing to help anyone who actually buys their products. I've been happy overall with my stoves but they should still have the time to answer customer service questions IMO.

Made a fire last night, this stove burns like a dream. Thank for pointing me in the right direction
