We have our own woodlot so it isn't an issue for us but many of the folks I speak with in our tri-county area tell me that it is difficult to find wood, either prosessed or log length. Shortage has been getting progressively worse the last couple of years since more & more big chip users are coming on line and local pellet mills are ramping up production.

I'm in NE PA. There seems to be more wood available here than I can ever remember seeing. Prices seem on par with last 3 years. I've even seen (for the 1st time) people putting the moisture content of their wood in the ad.

If you want free wood, the local township compost center/dump has a massive pile of cut wood that people drop off. I take 4-5 large rounds home every time I go (once a week in the summer). Last weekend was funny, some tree guys were dumping rounds and I was literally following them and putting them in my SUV.

Should have asked them if they would dump some at your house, case of beer goes a long way sometimes.

Up here on The north shore of Lake superior Thunder Bay Ontario area we have I wood shortage also we burn mostly birch up here but the wood lots are having trouble getting wood allocated for burning as opposed to other uses

Too much wood for free up here. I've left Hard Maple and Elm laying in the woods cuz my racks are full and I have rounds cluttering up the outdoors on pallets waiting to be split next spring. We need a good wood supply up here to survive the cold winters that we get!

I scrounge year round. Acquire all my wood in the winter, Spring and Summer, let it sit, cut it in the fall, and use it two years after (unless it's oak). I go through about 6 cords a year, and have about 25 cords. No problems here, but it is a full time thing 12 months a year. I'm always on the lookout.

In western MA, some are charging $380 per cord. The store where I bought some BioBricks to test told me they cannot get any wood this year, including their usual 10 cords that they bundle and sell as "romance firewood" (their term, not mine). A neighbor ordered her cords in April, then heard about the nasty winter we're supposed to have and called her supplier back in September for more and he was out. I've heard this from at least 3 others who heat with wood in my town (population 1700). So, there does seem to be an issue on the supply side, at least here in the Pioneer Valley of Western MA. I suspect if this holds and if the winter is hard, even the BioBricks and overnight logs will be gone by late winter -- similar to what happened around here a few years back where pellet suppliers could not meet the demand for pellets.
