It splits like a dream. I was worried from some of the post on sycamore. Or maybe it's just sugar maple but the tree service said it was sycamore maple.

No matter what it was just about free.

Sycamore maple is kind of rare so I don't have much experience identifying it from pictures, but I can believe your pictures are Sycamore Maple. It is a maple that has leaves sort of resembling Sycamore leaves, but the wood should be like other maples. It is not native but sometimes planted as a shade tree.

Sycamore, and I dont know the latin name for it, has that pale grey blotchy bark with very white silvery limbs. The trees get monster huge near water. I call them ghost trees because moonlight makes them glow in a night landscape.
Anyway, sycamore maple leaves look just like sycamore leaves. Named after each other but unrelated.
Ive never cut sycamore but its supposed to be unfriendly and not great firewood.

free wood , is the best kind

I say silver maple, even with the dark bark. I've seen it.

Sycamore is horrible to split by hand. It must be 80% maple.
