Is it bad for a log to touch the glass? I keep reading about people raking coals forward when reloading, and wonder if that is to free up space in the back for the logs, so they aren't right up front. Would love an explanation.

When a log rolls against the glass during the burn that is not a problem. You will just get a black spot there which you can clean later.
People rake their coals forward to get a more controlled burn after a reload and to burn down the coals quicker. As the air comes in from the front, it will heat up the coals which will ignite the fresh wood. The fire will then burn from the front to the back in a rather controlled fashion. Not raking the coals forward and placing the splits right on the hot coals is good way to get an overfire.

I know, its seems like overkill, but I already had one of these and I found the long handle prevents having to crouch down, and it only takes two scoops into a metal pail. Now you need to find a metal pail....
