Question about Englander

Englanders/ESW do build up with ash quickly and require a little more maintenance then high end models, as far as the buildup on the wear plate I would mark that as normal. Sounds like you are having a settings issue also, what settings are you on? Top bottom #s etc. what year is the stove?

I was just going to post something like this my self my setting are 5-4-1 (which i just changed it was highier) burns well on 1=2 at 3 I get back ash on the glass. only going thru a bag a day which is nice and the temp in my house is 74 - 1800 sf ranch. i read something ut can not find it now about running it on c or something I don't know how to check to see what setting it is on. sorry for high jacking your post but i figured others would know and sounds like we are having somewhat of the same problem

mine is like 2-3 yrs old me to the ash builds up hard crust the is easy to crush just started doing this on mine after i changed the setting otherwise is was fluffy ash but burnt thru the pellets

Try to lower your feed rate on the first bottom button try it at 4. I have a pdvc and it was doing the same thing once I lowered the low feed a notch it helped.also to check your mode setting unplug your stove plug it back in and push both the up down
Buttons on the blower it will then show u what mode your in. Hope this helps.

When something isn't working as you planned it is frustrating. You could change to Harman as you mentioned and end the frustration. It's a costly move but frustration free once the check clears, one seems not to look back at that moment but just enjoy the heat... Harmans are frustrating for the tinkerer at heart though, there isn't much to tinker with they just run !!

Two issues with going with a coal stoker stove here. I don't know about where you are. First we don't have a readily available supply of small cut coal and stokers use that. Second, ash, unless you have road side pickup of trash the dump itself doesn't take coal ash. And coal ash is no good for gardens unlike wood ash. Additionally Coal ash never breaks down, you can keep dumping coal ash into a pile outside until you have a huge mound. And that huge mound will be hard like cement ten years from now out there. So with all that in mind when it came time for us to buy a new stove , we bought a Harman P61a and switched to pellets. Very very pleased with it !

I quick clean mine daily let it shut off empty the pot over the side and then mid week vacuum the side out and once a week do a good cleaning on it mainly saturdays seems o to be doing o.k about a bag a day the 3 buttons was at 6 and i changed it to 1

Thanks guys and I've had coal before live right in the heart of the NEPA coal region so getting coal isn't a issue and actually our garbage men take the ashes I don't want to change back but honestly this stove has been nothing but nightmares I want to stay burning wood pellets it much cleaner and easier for the house but when the stove isn't burning right and no one seems to know the fix what do u do???? I clean it everyday and leaf vacuum the thing once a week and if it wouldn't fill the burn pot up and get rid of the ash Id feel comfortable but It backs up and I'm afraid of a hopper fire so I do t trust it

Have you tried different pellets ? A guy in the forum with a Napoleon was having ash issues in the pot too, he got his hands on some Blazer DF pellets, problem solved.

A P series Harman will burn about anything, from half broken down rotten pellets to top end. It's really quite amazing. I had to prove it to myself. I had some pellets that were water damaged for part of the bag, had swollen but also had dried back out. Dumped them in anyway and hand mixed them into the good ones in the hopper. Sure enough all gone at refill time, never a glitch in the flame.

Of course coal is cheaper and hotter ! Sorry, had to throw that in . Ya our pickup man takes the ash too but here that is a separate pay to have that service. If you go to the town dump, they don't take them but this guy does.

I know what ur saying....I'm gonna try different pellets burning hardwood barefoots now which are suppose to be awesome but maybe it's time to experiment some more I've heard softwood oellet ash is really fluffy and doesn't clog the ash pan as much but not sure where I can get them to even try them

Ya, not all stoves do well on hardwood pellets, seriously. If you can find some good softies that may do the trick. I got some Amercan Wood Fiber pure white pine at HD, great pellet very little ash. Douglas Firs are great too.

My thoughts are with you. I hit on those AWF totally on a whim. Was in there nosing around and saw them, it said pure white pine, the stats were good on the label so tried them. They are really good pellets.

I am NOT an expert, but the lower settings (5-9-1) seem to be off. My lower settings are 5-4-1 and I also set them to 4-4-1 to slow the burn down on mild days.

Check that your auger motors are operating correctly!

Ensure a thorough cleaning is done, including removing lower auger and scraping off any carbon buildup around the burn pot. My leaf blower trick is on steroids and will suck out the dust from figurines in the neighbor's house.

Have patience with ESW, everyone under the sun is installing pellet stoves right now so I'm sure they are swamped with phone calls/Emails/Fax questions!

Turn your stove off let it cool. Unplug it for a few min plug it back it and hold the up and down arrows for the blower at the same time and a letter should appear on the board.. Mine was set to D the factory setting (my stove ran like junk, no heat and ash build up in the burn pot and the glass would get black with ash) set it to C and it's a different animal tons of heat and it runs cleaner

It's a 2002 as far as I know there is no setting/mode changes until 2007?
