Well I never did solve the mystery but I took care of the problem. I bought a new pellet stove and it's working like a charm. I did remove a 90 degree elbow from the chimney because the exhaust outlet is in a different spot but it appeared to be in good shape. No leaks or restrictions. Now I just need to figure out the best way to dispose of this old Harman stove!

Crate it up and I'll give you $300 for it

I bought a Vogelzang VG5790. So far so good but I'm still learning to use the air valve on the air inlet. It runs quieter than the Harman. Right off the bat I like that there are doors on both sides so all the parts are easy to get to. Also the auger is tilted up and the pellets drop in so when you turn the stove off it doesn't burn through the auger like the Harman. One thing I like about the Harman is that once you get that cast iron warmed up, it puts out some good heat.
