So the short boot on top of the stove I'm looking at was added? So it may be worth adding a partial liner to at least get past the existing fireplace damper

did not know the flange on my stove was an added item.
The concept works. seems to have been done very well.fisher insert face 013.jpg fisher insert face 014.jpg fisher insert face 015.jpg fisher insert face 016.jpg

Mine was an early one with the chain that operated the damper, but mine did not have that flange at all. It was completely flat, and the rod that is connected to the damper ran the full width of the insert from one side to the other. As you can see at the top of the picture I am attaching (that each piece of flat steel was just the surround laid on top of it.)

Glove is from Indiana, so it would be specific to that fabricator. Honey Bear Insert has an extension above the Insert;

I don't have a picture of the top of a Polar Bear for fabricated zero clearance fireplace. His is not that model since they had an ash fender the same as the thin shelf as Honey Bear with no 1 inch channel iron edge. And their convection air space is much larger.

His Flue Pipe looks very thin too. It looks like the old pipe used on the early stoves when they called for 12 ga thickness pipe. (and went by OD dimension making them a tight fit) Before 1980 when the Insert started they were 1/4 inch on most models and 5/16 on some. They are the inside sized dimension that fits connector pipe well.
