1 ton per full ash pan.?

My Harman P 61A Manual claims that I can burn 1 ton of pellets before having to empty the hugh ash pan.
Evidently they never Burned Stove Chows......Man o Man!!!
these pellets burn hot as Haiti but oh my the ash is plentiful..
Stove was winding down yesterday so I opened it up and started brushing all the ash inside..
by the time I was done I didn't have a full ash pan but close to 3/4 full I would say...
that was from burning about 20 bags of chows...

I pretty much get a ton to a pan with Lignetics in my Harman Accentra insert. Really happy with them.

If you don't like that then don't bother with Fireside Ultra or Natures Own either !

I know all the Ashy brands.. specially Home depot/Tractor supply, Agway, and Walmarts stuff..
I was just finishing up last yrs chows stash.....[nebie last year]...
On to better pellets now....

In order, the pellets I've burned with the least ash were and are, Douglas Fir from Okanagan, Lacrete, American Wood Fiber pure White pine. Probably about the same order in terms of heat as well. LaCrete and Maine Woods blends give about the same heat with Maine Wood producing a little more ash but less ash than Energex Hardwood. Energex Hardwood are hot and ashy but not as bad as Fireside Ultra and nothing can be as bad as Natures Own, which gave me a mess in my stove and the least heat of any pellet I've burned yet ! Now most of that is based on last years burns in my P61.
 
Yeah,I always thought the Harman one ton of pellets per ash pan cleaning claim was a tad optimistic. I may have gotten to 35 to 40 bags of Clean Fire Pacific before I had to clean the ash pan. The Green Supremes were definitely 3 ash pan cleans per ton.
 
Still beats some stoves that have to be tended to everyday or even weekly, let alone the weekly tare down to clean.
 
Some of them are more than once a day cleanings I've seen peeps doing but no ash pans. I could probably get close to a ton thru the P68 using Pros or Sets without doing the pan but I have been cleaning way more than I have to so I have messed up gauging it. I did burn right at a ton thus far in a month. Not bad considering we have had a lot of abnormally cold weather so far setting new record lows and beating snow fall accumulations. Now it's going to upper 50's and 60's starting tomorrow for a bit. I have slowed way down on the bigger cleans but wanted to get familiar to be quicker in the cold, cold. Going to do it tomorrow or Sunday if I feel like it. Nice having one you can put off.

2013 Barefoots, and 2012 Vermonts had the least ash. This year I find North Country Soft Pellets the best. Very little light and fluffy ash balls, which almost seem to actually clean the burnpot...seriously.
 
Yeah, I've always thought the one ton = full ash pan was a pipe dream, especially given the smaller ash pan in our insert. Always thought it was kinda funny that Harman manuals had the same wording for the inserts with the small ash pans and the big stoves with the larger pans.
 
OK PHX Hatchling, I think it's time to slow down on the vino! In the other thread. LOL! ==c I need you in my sales dept. Pellets that clean the pot. Is that bottle running low? Enjoy and tip one for me!
 
That's one reason I try to only burn really high quality clean pellets (softwoods) because the amount of ash is less. Additionally, I figure less ash equals less maintenance and longer life of parts (because ash can plug things up and is corrosive).
 
When my Harman insert was brand new (about 14 yrs ago)and all I burned was NEWP, it really was close to one ash pan per ton. Today's NEWPs/Green supremes are about 1 pan per 10 bags. :(
 
As the OP, I must say i really don't have any problem with ash or amount of ash...
Twas just an Observation...
it's all gotta come out of the stove sooner or later..Gives me something to do and I Appreciate the warmth.....
I'm just happy to be able to keep my house at 73-74 degrees with a Pellet stove and wood pellets.
Using Oil to keep my house at same temps 24/7 would be way too exspensive concidering we have a 90 yr old
not well insulated house..Ash is the bi-product of it all....Some more than others/
No biggie...Harman company needs to burn some stove chows as I stated earlier.
Starting on 2 tons of Energex hardwoods now..

Ash from some softwood pellets leave no resin on hotter burns so in effect the ash itself can kind of mop up a dirty looking pot. It's just light fluffy almost dust like ash, so while there is some ash on the pot yes, it picks up residue left by dirtier pellets, especially on hotter burns and as time goes on. The AWF white pines have been like this up till the last two bags, these last two bags have a little more ash in them than the rest had unless by chance some of the LG I was burning has stuck out near the sides of the hopper and now are mixing in , which is possible as my hopper is not letting pellets slide down naturally around the sides, I must need to wax it..

I started on my stash of Energex Hardwood today as well. We went to Boston to see our Granddaughter up at college, take her out to lunch etc. Just returned a half hour ago to two cheeks of ash bunnies and an inch or so worth across the center of the burn pot. I scraped it off into the ash pan. But the house is still 73-74 like it was when we left so all is good. I've burned these before they will be fine and maybe my rash and itchy eyes will go away.
 
A little humidity goes a long way toward curing those maladies...

I'm allergic to pine pollen, so handling the bags etc my wrists have broken out in a rash. It's contact dermatitis, it starts with raised bump s, then red rash, then itchy, then bigger bumps, then spreads. Eyes itch from the dust or from the smoke when I crack the door to scrape off the ash. Same as summer pollen.
 
Burning Somerset pellets, I can get about three quarters of a ton worth of pellets burned before I have to empty the pan on my Bosca 500 classic.

I get the same.... ash bunnies on each side and ash across the front...but, very concistant when it comes to good steady heat..
73-74 all the time also.

Kind of like you but not pollen. Pine sap causes me to break out with hives.
 
A word of caution to everyone on ash pan dumping. Don't dump your ashes in the garden and expect them to be a nutrient. They ain't unless you intensively till them in. Found that out 2 years ago, my beans refused to grow in soil that I had dumped the ash pan in. Now I just toss it in the gravel driveway and call it good.

I empty my ash pan at least every other week. Since I shut it down weekly to make sure the pot is cleaned and to clean the door glass, I just peek into the pan to determine if it needs emptied. I don't bother figuring how much I've burned but always assume their assertions are on the optimistic side.
