I'm so leery of those amazon IR thermometers. Though they have many positive reviews... They also all have many negative ones as well. Are the inexpensive IR's worth the gamble?

The gamble is seventeen bucks, and of course Amazon will take it back if there's a problem with it. The one I got works fantastic. It is accurate as I can verify with other known sources. Of course YMMV, but this particular model has garnered nearly 600 reviews with 4.5 stars. That's sort of a rare (good) thing on Amazon. Get it, or whatever - but you'll find more uses for an IR temp gage than you might initially think of.

I went around my house and found leaky window and door seals. Its a valuable little tool.

I'm not knocking your suggestion, after all I asked for it, and it's appreciated. I know it's an inexpensive purchase with minimal losses if I get a dud. I'm just the type that is overly anal about buying products of questionable quality. In a reality I don't have the money for a super expensive IR gun, so a budget one will have to be my choice.

Just curious, do you use a stove top, as well as a stove pipe thermometer also? I have to admit having an IR gun would be cool to own regardless of having a wood stove.

Yeah I have a little mag puck-type thermometer on my stove top. I was really suspect of that thing being possibly grossly inaccurate, so I got the IR unit. Turns out the stove top unit was very close to accurate.

Yep. I have a Rutland mag thermo that is dog on with the IR gun.

Spent a bunch of money to test a digital thermocouple unit this year that is a total piece of off by a hundred degrees piece of crap.

Good looking wood stove install. I like the innovative and simple steel hearth. Very good looking.

Thank you very much! Your comments are greatly appreciated. The wife and I really winged this whole thing... She came up with the idea for the steel plate, I picked the stove... And it all literally worked out too the dot as far as clearances go.

I'll have to second the motion: you did a fantastic job with the install. I really like how simple and elegant the whole thing is. You appear to be a very talented craftsman.

Simple and elegant hits the mark! We love simplicity, clean lines... And not your cookie cutter store bought design. I'm far from a craftsman, but since becoming a home owner I'm learning.

All of your warm and pleasing comments go a long way. This whole project was winged and initiated on faith lol. I had rough measurements and it all looked like it would go in how I wanted... Thankfully it did!

Harbor freight has a nice ir gun and cheap with 20% off coupon

Nice, clean looking installation.

me perusing old threads... This is also my idea and am in the process of working with a metal worker. I really do not like the hearths I am seeing in the stores and online so planning on a corner install of quarter inch steel plate. Interesting that you used felt pads and poly. Hadn't considered either. More to ponder. Looks great.
