My stove will not run off of 8000w generator. It starts, runs great for 5 minutes, then goes into shutdown mode. Even tried running direct extension cord from generator, same results. Only thing I haven't done is ground generator. Any ideas appreciated.

It is shutting down because of the modified sine wave output of the generator as opposed to pure sign wave that comes out of the your wall outlet.

It sees the mod sine wave as "dirty" power and shuts down.

I have a 7500 Watt Generac Generator with a transfer switch to power most areas of the house..
That said,
I DO NOT use the generator to run my Harman due to the dirty[ fluctuating power] coming off of it..
I am leary of burning up or ruining the circuit board in the Harman...
I Run my Oil Furnace for heat in the event of power Outtage..[Saved a million gallons of oil anyways.] ALL my hardwired rooms and such are connected to the transfer switch which is connected to the main power box.
If you do not have any other heat source, you may think about a Honda Inverter type that generates clean steady power...
I didn't buy one because they are too pricey for the lower wattage and already have a big Generator for the house and a backup heat source.
btw: I;m sure there are some here who have not had a problem using a standard Genny to run the're stoves.. I just won't chance it since I don't have to..

What kind of generator? Age?

If the power is dirty enough, it will likely fry the board on your Harmon if you keep trying to use it - and might fry boards in anything else that has a board that is plugged into it too.

If the newer Harmans shut down, that is a good...
A wakeup call to not use the genny and possibly damage the circuitry..

It's an 8000 watt generator, with I assume some mass to the rotating components. It might not be providing clean power, but I'm pretty sure the term "modified sine wave" wouldn't apply. I could be wrong, of course. :)
 
My neighbor has a new Generac sitting down in his garage that is 8,500 watt peak. And it is a modified sine wave output. Most of them are. Except for the inverter jobbies there are very few pure sine wave generators floating around.
 
If your genny has a DC output then maybe spend $200 on a pure sine wave inverter to run your stove while also running your house of the AC .

also, how much load are you putting on the genny? Many generators (aside from inverter types) do not make clean power if underutilized. If it is putting out 2/3 to 3/4 or more of its max (running) load, it is actually cleaner than at idle. One reason why bigger is not always better.

My P43 is running room temp, manual on my 8500 watt generator, as is the rest of our house. That said, I did modify my generator to run wfo all the time. maybe that's the difference.

Same here with my 5500w gen. Though it seems to run everything else just fine I won't try it with the stove.. For one thing the stove is on a circuit that I don't have powered through my gen. No, I just let the stove go out and the oil heat come on rather than risk a $300 board. My transfer switch is wired that way so I just run with that.

I can run the hardwired room my stove is in but like you,

i keep threatening to swap out my transfer switch for one with more circuits. It only has 6 because we needed it in a hurry and that's what was available. The gen would have no trouble with 10 since the added circuits would all be low draw. The heavy stuff is already on board and that barely runs the meters up. But hey we have some lights, all the fridges, the freezer, work stations in two kitchens and heat and hot water. So how much does one really need beyond that ? We left the second floor dark. Well maybe some day.

all the breakers on it are interchangeable which was good for us because it came with many 15 ampers and I am using mostly 20amp circuits so it was easy to swap them.
btw: my whole 2nd floor is energized due to the 10 breaker model.
didn't hook up anything that was big like electric stove, washer, dryer but did hook up our 24k AC Wall unit.

we use our microwave or I cook on the grill since I didn't want to tie up a 30amp breaker on electric stove.. I actually pulled the 30 amp breaker and put 2 15's in it;s place which gave us energized 2nd floor..
my wife will run the vacuum cleaner during a power outtage and call her sister so she can hear it... she has been after her and her husband to get a genny..

And me after my oldest daughter. Last year their house was out for over a week, they had to move out when it got down to 36 deg inside. But ya know when you're trying to get kids through college etc it's tough to justify something that sits 98% of the time and isn't all that cheap to get into. And it's an engine to maintain etc etc..
 
I haven't used my big portable gen to run the stove but the problem might be more of a frequency issue than "dirty power". As long as the gen has AVR it should run stove fine. Others here use big portables no problem. If the gen has a governor adjust get a kilowatt meter and adjust output to close to ~60 cycle with a moderate 1500 W load. Running Sensitive electronics on a big (non-inverter) gen could be more about 60 cycle output than a square wave. Worth a try.....,,

I use my EU2000i for the PS.

Harmon Is that a Chinese nock off ? I plugged my Harman p35i into my generator and had no issues ..
 
I haven't used my big portable gen to run the stove but the problem might be more of a frequency issue than "dirty power". As long as the gen has AVR it should run stove fine. That is a factor yes. But I still don't trust it and my gen is very stable running and surges don't flux the output hardly at all. electronic voltage regulators work wonders. This leads me to another thought, if the gens own electronics works on the gen why not a harman board ?
