Well I have been waiting for this for a while. I have kept track for the last 5 years of all oil delivery's and prices. Last season I burned 909 gallons of oil at 3.89 a gallon. Yeah 3529.98 to heat my house. Well I said enough is enough. I had a napoleon 1402 installed and I installed programable thermostats in the house. I have 4 zones and each zone is turned off when we are home. I have been lighting the insert to get the house to a comfy 72 degrees. Today I had 74 gallons of oil delivered at 3.49 a gallon. Last year for my december delivery I had 107 gallons delivered for a savings of 33 gallons. I'm pumped and thrilled to have pulled the trigger on the insert. The next delivery will be in one month typically the last 5 years the delivery is 130 gallons. Then the same for february 130 gallons. the insert is really cutting into my oil bill. We use oil to heat the hot water so it turns on itself. All my wood is free my neighbor had a tree cut 2 years ago and I got the wood oak I have about three cords.

When I call my oil co for oil they usually say they removed me from their customer list. I only heat DHW.

Good for you! Excellent.

I got my insert (pellet though) installed in mid October. I haven't use one drop of oil yet, except for hot water. So about 30 gallons a month just for DHW. A great feeling. Although oil deliveries in southern NH are averaging about $2.99 gallon right now, so while the spread isn't as big as past years, I'm still saving...

I hope to see much less of the oil delivery guy this year as well.

Good news! I burn propane but I burn quite a bit of wood, I save a huge chunk on propane bills with my little wood stove. Also the fireplace is a pretty good heater, uses a lot of wood though.

Set the lower number on the spread near $0.00, and you'll feel even better. That is the cost of oil when you don't use any. There is the cost of wood, but I don't wanna ruin the fun.

Yeah its a sick feeling when you see them pull up to your home. I guess I'm lucky this year. With the insert and low oil prices I should save some money. Two years ago my oil was 409. a gallon This is a much better way to heat.

Its a great feeling to be doing something other than paying oil bills. I know now that I will keep scrounging for wood and looking for ways to save. Bottom line there is no better feeling than sitting in your home and soaking up the warmth of wood heat .

The whole winter last year I used 188 gal of oil. Which I think is great. This year oil prices dropped a lot I think that you can get $2.80 a gal if you look around here in CT. Last year I didn't have much wood I was still learning (not say that I stopped) so this year I want go for less than a 100 gal. My house is all electric other than oil heat.

Haven't seen the oil guy in 5 years.

I added an electric HWH. Cost $250 @ Home Boy Depot. A friend added it into older existing piping for the older oiled fired HWH.

Electric bill went up $45 a month. Showers & dishes.

Happy Dix ;)

From November of 2013 to March 2014, we burned a record high of 110 gallons because we ran out of wood. We were considering an on demand system for DHW, but not sure of the payback time.

I will typically wait until my oil tank is almost empty before ordering a refill which is usually around August. With the steep drop in oil prices, I may top it off sooner before oil decides to skyrocket again.

Since 2008 I've only bought oil a few times (and have never completely filled the tank) . . . it's a rare enough event that I now get sticker shock every time I call around to find the best price.

Hi all....I used 700 gallons of oil last year, so I decided to put an insert in. So far I love it, although the cold weather really hasn't hit us here on Long Island yet. The real test will be when it fiinally gets here and sticks around for a bit. Last year we had some pretty cold days with temps around 0 degrees.....

Thats awesome. I figure by adding my insert I should cut my oil bill by a 1/3. This sight has been awesome for me. I go on it every day and learn something new that helps me.

Had to order oil this year for the first time since fall of 2011. Bummer. But we use a bit more oil than we used to because I now allow the furnace to run in the morning to warm the house back up. Then the stoves get fired up and the furnace stays off. So I do about 1 furnace burn a day.

Ordered 150 gallons this year and hope that is all I need to get through the winter, but we'll see.

good for you.. Oil is expensive around you it was $2.55 last night when I drove by a place.

I too installed the Napoleon 1402 recently. I'm on a heat pump here in NE Ohio. For those of you that remember the temps last winter I had electric bills that exceeded 800 for a month or two with others in the 500-600 range all winter. Electric furnace never shut off with the auxiliary heating running full go. Couldn't take anymore so I paid for the insert. My only risk now is running out of wood. Working on the get 2 years ahead plan but don't even know what a years worth looks like real good yet.

We have 4000 sf ft of 1800s Federal.
4 years ago, we used 1750+ galls of oil so started an insulation and wood/pellet program.
After 3 years of fixing and insulating, we're down to:
375 galls of oil, 3 tons pellets and 3 chords of wood.

We only use the oil when we are outa town and for nights below 10 deg F.
We run on just the pellet stove and wood stove when we are both home.
Real savings and better comfort.
Our Oil deliveries now are once annually and that is only because I want to start the winter with full tanks, just in case...

About 4 years ago my wife an I sold our house and moved into my in laws after they became snowbirds and moved to Florida for the winter. We did this as a temporary arrangement until they were ready to sell their house in Maine. We were planning on buying a new house in a few years anyway so it worked out well for both parties. Anyways... Their house was pretty big - around 2600-2800 square feet and was heated only by FHW oil boiler. We were going through a tank roughly every 3 weeks through the winter. We bought our current house in summer 2013 and last year was our first winter. I burned 3 cord of wood and roughly 200 gallons of oil through the winter for hot water and heat. We spent so much on oil and electricity at the in laws (we paid no rent, only utilities and upkeep) it was actually cheaper for us to be in our new house with a mortgage payment. With oil at $2.50/gallon right now it doesn't make me cringe when I hear the boiler kick on when I'm lazy and don't have a fire burning.
