Speed split...? Speed Pro?

Are you talking about kinetic log splitters? The Super Split log splitter and the DR version the Speed Pro? Which one are you getting? Kinetic log splitters are a different way of splitting wood than a hydraulic splitter. These splitters use heavy flywheels (2 - 50 to 90#ers) that transfer energy and cause a ram to quickly come out and split the wood. There are advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages: they are faster than hydraulic splitters, they use smaller engines, they don't use hydraulics.
Disadvantages: Cost, they don't go vertical, gnarley wood/crotches could be a problem, less safe due to speed(?), more prone to breakdown(?), you need the $300 table
The company that sells Super Split doesn't build anything else. DR builds many other things besides kinetic wood splitters. Users seem to give the edge to the Super Split - the original manufacturer. They say it is more dependable and more user friendly. Both companies are building electric versions of these kinetic splitters.
I like these splitters and wouldn't mind trying one out. I would probably go with the super split. They have 2 basic versions one with two 75# flywheels and one with 90# flywheels. Both appear to be effective. DR's largest splitter has two 75# flywheels. I see where DR just came out with a kinetic splitter that has only one 50 or 75# flywheel. I wonder how it splits? It is priced to compete against the $1K hydraulic log splitters. Good Luck!

Have an old Super Split. Works awesome on most of what I split. If you have a lot of really big rounds I would want a hydro, but otherwise it can't be beat. When I have any issue with it, its simple fixes with readily available parts, or a call to Paul at SS, and he knows how to fix it. Great service and a product that lasts. Not cheap, but I think you get what you pay for.

I'm open to the idea of others coming out with a quality product, but I'd go with the Super Split and it's quality track record today.

Agreed, from everything I've read the Super-Split has been a fantastic product and excellent service. I ended up going with a smaller hydraulic splitter for myself but if I was going to spend 3k on a splitter the Super-Split would be at the top of my list.
