Thanks to the advice from this forum I have managed to get a decent score of white oak. On my way to work I saw a tree cutting company at work at a nearby house and asked if they needed somewhere to dump the wood. They brought me this and there is more they will bring in the next couple of days.

So it never hurts to ask your local tree guys for firewood. And best of all, it is free!

+1 what Hogwildz said. You treat them good they will remember about you, and you still will be ahead of the game even if you give them some money.
 
Damn, your Fiskars is salivating at the sight of that straight-grained Oak.
You're gonna have some serious fun splitting that!
 
Only thing better than that, is owning a tree service and getting paid to haul that stuff home! It makes me sick to think of all the wood I gave away, and here I am now with a new wood stove scrounging the dead ash trees for heat this winter.

Next winter's pile is looking nice though.
