How much wood should it burn?

Hi,

So I have a new Jotul F500/Oslo. I am trying to use it for 24/7 heat for a 3100 sq foot home in New England, yes ill have to supplement it at times with oil heat.

My question is, I fill it about 6am, then 6pm, then 11pm, so 3 times a day about. And I use 2/5ths of a cord of wood per week.

Is this a normal amount of wood per week?

It cruises along at about 450-500F......
 
Sounds right to me. The species and moisture content of the wood will vary these results greatly.

From what I'm told the wood quality was excellent and it was seasoned over a year to 18 months.

My chimney is a center chimney no draft issues so I was told to put steel wool in the air inlet underneath to slow down the burn and get longer burn times. It hasn't changed the amount it burns though but does keep a decent amount of hot coals the next morning
 
Yes. Sounds like you have a good system. A normal rate of fuel consumption is somewhere around 1 cord/month in the coldest months. I'm at a much lower consumption rate currently as I am heating a significantly smaller space (1,700 sf), but I'll be burning more wood as the winter sets in.
 
Right now I'm burning about 1 and a half cords per month and it's not even the coldest months.... However I am heating a larger space.

Just wanted to check its normal.
 
Yup, sounds about par for the course, you probably end up in 5 to 5 1/2 seasonal cord range burning from November to late March, it may seem like a lot, but 3,000 sq ft in New England weather, that's pretty darn good.
 
Lol I'm betting I use up the six cords or damn close to it! Last thing I want to do I order more wood in crappy March and restack it etc
 
The stove is doing it's job.. Loading it 3 times a day is normal. That's a big space to heat. I would expect you to go through 4-5 cords in a normal winter.
