Wood ID please

Can you please ID for me. Here is a picture of a small piece. It has a light golden tint to it. image.jpgimage.jpg
 
Need better pics. Could be cottonwood with that thick bark, or possibly bur oak, but hard to tell from those pictures. I would lean towards cottonwood.
 
If it was from around here, no prkblem. Chestnut oak. Haven't seen enough cottonwood to say no to that.
 
That bark is too thick for Locust.
 
The last picture confirms it is not oak. There are no medullary rays visible, and with this close up, clear picture they'd be visible. I don't know what it is.
 
The golden tint tells a lot, that's a black locust description.....
 
The 2 pictures are of BL in my pile - just to give an example of what it looks like.

I agree the bark could be black locust too. Pictures could always be better it seems ;)

Deep heavy bark and yellow tint when first cut or split- black locust
 
It sort of looks like oak but I don't see any medullary rays. I don't know what it is. more pictures would help. Ideally the pictures would show the ends of a few splits and the sides of a few. Was this a long-dead tree?
 
I think it is Cottonwood. The close-up shot of the end of a split makes it look as though the wood is ring-porous (lots of woods including cottonwood are ring-porous), and the bark is very thick like cottonwood. I think it isn't an oak because of the lack of medullary rays.

I don't think its cottonwood. You should surely be able to tell the weight difference between oak and cottonwood though.

They do have weight to them like a hardwood should have. Dead at least a yr.

Can you show a clear picture of the grain, just a flush on picture of the split side; I think that would help if we could clearly see the grain-thanks !

The first pics, wood looked a bit punky, maybe rays weren't visible on that sample? Could use a pic of the split grain but I'm not holding out much hope, seeing how grainy the other pics are. :p

I have split red oak that doesn't have medullary rays I believe it was some 8-10" stuff
