24yd dumpster load of rounds

Thinking of getting a 24yd dumpster of rounds delivered. Seller is saying its 4+ cords. Price is 400 +50 for delivery since i am about an hour from him. Rounds are 14-18in lengths, various diameters.

How much wood should I realisticaly expect to get? I am thinking 4 cords is about right, though could be as low as 3.5 if my math is correct.
 
1 cubic yard is 3ft x 3ft x 3ft which is 27 cubic feet. times 24 of them in the dumpster (assuming it's full) yields 648 cubic feet in that container.

With 128 cubic feet in a cord of wood, 648/128 = 5.06 cord. How much air space is in there, how loosely stacked, how full it's filled, etc, leaves me to say that the actual amount is anyone's guess. But, I'll be surprised if you get any more than 4 cord, so without seeing any pics, I think you have a decent estimate at 3.5 to 4.

However, 450 for a pile of mystery rounds of varying length, doesn't sound like a deal to me, personally. But, that's going on a cord of split hardwood selling for 150 to 175 around here. Not sure what your local prices are or what sort of wood (species) are in there, but for my area, I can say I would be surprised to see it sell at that. In your area it might be a different story.

Any pics of the load? Know what's in it? How are the prices in your area? Is processing this in your yard this time of year going to cause any issues? Lot of things to consider. How hard is it to source your own wood and bring it home?

How much do you think you could get 4 cords of split wood delivered for? Most guys give break on multiple cords. See if you could get split cord wood at say at $150 cord then 4 = $550. If that was the case I know what I would do. If you can't maybe that helps you make up your mind.
 
Firewood around here usually sells for 200-250. I do gather my own, but i udually only manage to scrounge 4-5 cords a year. Still working on getting a couple years ahead so thought this sounded like a decent deal.

Wood is all "hardwood", they said alot of it was a mix of black cherry, ash, oak and beech.

I know its not an amazing deal, but already cut to length and drlivered i think i can live with 110-140ish a cord depending on the exact quantity i end up with.

At those prices for split, it does sound like a better deal, if the quality of the wood is decent.

Driving around to gather other wood adds time and gas money, which may help sweeten the deal.

If you've seen it in some decent pics, and it looks legit, and they guarantee all hardwood, the deal is sounding better for you.

If you have the room to work on this at your place, do you have the room to work a load of full logs? Ever try and price a triaxle load for your area?

Another thought (not for right now, but for the future) would be to try and get friendly with some tree trimming services in your area. Depending on how picky you are, you may be able to find a guy who needs to get rid of wood in your area and if you have the room for him, might wind up getting yourself some good wood over time and help save him from hauling stuff he doesn't want / need too far.

I dunno about the price or quality, but I suspect 4 cords split and stacked is probably pretty close. Is the guy's word of mouth reputation decent?

I would be a little skittish about the "14 to 18 inch" length part. I did have a load of logs delivered this year and I know exactly who to blame if i cut one of the rounds too long to fit in the stove.
 
I have not ever used this person, or heard anything about them really. It's a tree service out of New Haven, CT. I am not too concerned about the lengths, my new stove will take a max of 22in. All of the stuff i am cutting on my own now i am cutting to 20+/- though.

I have priced a triaxle recently, and going that route i am looking at about 100ish a cord, plus a delivery fee of $100 or so since i am off the beaten bath a little. So when compared to this of being already cut into rounds it seems like , i don't know 20% less work? Which would be worth the small difference in price i think.
 
That's a pretty good deal, rounds already cut up, just need to split. I hope you get it, good luck
 
Rambler- I am somewhat familiar with who this is. I got a dumpster can of split wood, week before hurricane sandy ..... It was not close to the agreed upon amount & there was a lot of splitter tailings in the load too, was NOT , seasoned well either, had many a slow going fire my 1st year,,, they stated it had been on the ground for a year, may have been true, but it hadn't been split that long when I got it...
Suggestion call K & J tree service out of Hamden, Jesse has a drop list for all towns they work in , I got a nice load grappled onto my landing area few weeks ago,,,spoke to a few buddies of mine who also get loads dropped at no charge...
For myself wood wise: I follow the line clearing crews progress & I scrounge, also dropped more trees on my own property, some I paid for others I coerced CL & P to drop as they were dying and over utility lines.
 
FYI- being in the home remodeling field , I have dumpsters dropped all the time & I am familiar with sizing,,,l something doesn't seem right..... Do a search for 24 yard dumpster picture, can't find one..... So does this guy even know what he's trying to sell? Sounds like embellishing the size to me... Just my $.02

I left several messages to this same tree service. Never got a call returned. I am just going to buy log lengths so I can cut and split to the size that suits my stove. Pretty much all the wood I have purchased has been too short or too small. I found one guy that has just the right fit but he will not deliver to me and is difficult to get a hold of. That was in the spring/summer so things might be different now.

Depending on where you live I know of a tree farm that is putting in a kiln. Last time I spoke to him he said mid December and was shooting for 20% mc.

Well stated... maybe another way to say it is, "sometimes the rat comes out of a different hole". The price for a dumpster load of rounds sounds high to me.
 
I recieved delivery of this yesterday. It came piled very high in the dumpster. I am confident it is easily 4 cords if not a little more. Most everything looks to be cut 16-18in. Wood is a mix of red oak, maple, beech, and black cherry.

Great to do business with, and i wouldnt have any issues buying a load from them again. They are an actual company, give you a receipt, and you can pay cash or with a credit card. Very nice and were there when they said they would be.

They are out of New Haven, CT. If anyone wants their contact info just shoot me a PM
 
i just googled 24yd dump trailer and found what j am pretty sure they delivered with, a 24yd palmer dump trailer.
 
I'll be curious to hear your findings on how dry it is...let us know if it burns well.
 
Sorry...apparently I have reading comprehension issues. I missed the 'rounds' reference despite it being referenced several times.
 
That's not a bad deal at all, if you don't mind burning 16-18", that's what I've been burning in my PH this year and will be next year too but once I burn through that I can burn 20-21" in the PH, that's over 20% more fuel per load. I have 1/3 of a cord or so of 20" that I'm saving for the dead of winter.
 
My 40yd dumpsters average 5-6 cord of rounds/logs but it isn't packed tight due to the way we load and also not loaded over top due to height restrictions. hes prolly close in his estimate of 4 cords if loaded well .
