If I am trying to bring the house temp.up from 60 deg. F to 70 deg. F. is it better running the stove with a few splits and a lot of flame or putting stove in secondary burn (damper closed) once I have a nice coal bed and stove top is 500 deg. F. or more? My first thought is that with the roaring fire the room temp. should rise faster but I am willing to bet that I am wrong. The Vermont Castings manual doesn't talk about different situations like this. This stove is new to me and my first with a secondary burn.

You'll get heat based on stove temperature. I doubt a couple splits will get the stove up to 450-550, but a full load certainly will. Load up the stove to get the most heat.

Not using the same stove as you but when mine kicks in to secondary burn it gets much warmer. And uses less wood to get that heat!
