Feeling the Heat

It's not for me, but rather a disabled veteran that has a wood stove to heat his NE Philly home. I took him a pickup truck load of well seasoned oak, locust and mulberry yesterday. This is the 3rd year in a row that we've done it for his family - always this time of year. He keeps an ad up on Craigslist asking for firewood but gets little to no response and has even been scammed. His story is legit and I will glad answer any questions since I've gotten to know him better over the past few years. I don't have the stock to take him more than 1 load this year and he's also about an hour and a half away from me one-way. But the lesson we are teaching our children and knowing that his family will be warm throughout the holidays makes it well worth it. Here's his CL ad, PM me any questions. If you are short on wood but are close and feeling generous, some of those compressed wood bricks like Eco bricks would work for him too. Happy Holidays!

These kinds of ads rub me the wrong way. "all I'm asking is some firewood for my wood burning stove". If it was so easy why don't you get it before the winter?
I have a hard time believing that a person in this desperate condition doesn't already have a support system in place to provide firwood, prior to the coldest days of winter.
The add is also insulting. Like people who have the supply by preparing are greedy.
I know 10 guys that would truly help this guy (disabled vet) in our community.

You're mad because someone in need is asking for help? Some people... I would gladly have given this guy a pickup load if he was closer. Hopefully someone on here will be able to help.

Philly is the city of brotherly love. Just payin' it forward.

Do you know what kind of stove he's running? I have plenty of dry 20-22" splits that I'll be happy to drop off if they'll fit. Nice of you to advance this, CSD... Merry Christmas!

Andy - I don't know what size his stove is and I doubt he'll turn down your offer if you call him. I cut my wood to anything from 16- 22" and that's what I given him over the years and he has never told me it was an issue. Merry Christmas to you as well and thanks for representing!

I gave a stake bed truck load to a struggling local family who just got an old stove. They are so happy, told me they only burn 6 pieces a day so it should last them a while.

Yeah, no need to be a jerk. This is a veteran we are talking about.

Where is he? I'm about 60 miles north of NE Philly. I could probably stretch a half cord. But it's a long distance.

I have to see where he is located, my F150 is a 5.5' bed and I have a big Weathergard toolbox in it so I can't fit much, but maybe over our Xmas break I could take him some. Where is he located Clyde? God bless our Military, I have a few buddies in SF and I'd gladly help a Vet if I can. Thank y'all for your service and Merry Xmas to all :)

Sometimes I will help folks when they ask and I have something to give. A month ago, I gave an elderly widow who uses wood as her primary source of heat and whose husband just passed away one of my full loads, ~ 2.5 cords. I've got a big trailer.

Once I got to the drop-off house I could see her late husband's set-up and smell the smoke coming from the chimney - hmmm, a non-EPA wood stove I guessed. There was a wood splitter and about 1.5 cords of small firewood and scrap wood - pallets and such. She might make it to January. I filled the 2 bins - just threw the firewood in and was out of there.

What caused me to give the above wood away? A few days before I was hauling another load and about 25 pieces of cottonwood fell out of my trailer over a distance of about a block. I pull over and drive back to the start of the spill and begin picking up the firewood. I get back in truck and drive forward, pick up wood, etc... Anyway an old couple pulls over a half a block ahead and starts picking up "my" wood. I shout loudly - "Hey that is my wood!" I'm screaming over a couple pieces of cottonwood! How ridiculous. I was surprised at myself. I could see I had become a bit too obsessed.

He is about 10 mins off of I-95, exit 27 roughly 10 miles NE of center city. I'm in my office today and don't have his address with me but if you call him he'll give it to you and you can GPS it from there or I can PM it to you later today.

I appreciate those who have responded positively. While not a veteran myself my father is and as you said Chris, our veterans paid the ultimate sacrifice.

I agree it is worded very poorly. But who knows what disability this guy has? There are many vets coming back with some sort of head trauma.

Always best to respond with care and let the cards fall were they may. Almost everyone who needs charity did something to get themselves in that spot. But that is never a reason not to help. Some don't have good family and friends to fall back on like many of us here. An others have very ill fortune.

Soft hearts live much fuller lives then hard ones. :)

Lets keep the name calling out of it. If you want to help this vet - please do. If you do not - click on a different post.

I hope I am wrong about this posting. Someone post back after delivering wood. I'll gladly eat my cynical words and apologize.

This is my third year giving him a pickup truck load of firewood. The first year I decided to do this, I perused CL want ads and his stood out the most. After meeting him and seeing his situation, regardless of the distance I will try to help him out. I'm not looking for a pat on the back or anything like that, just passing his request along to the wood burning community with the hopes someone else will help since I can't do more than I already have. The last 2 times I took him firewood I posted it here as well, not sure if anything came of it though.

Could always donate money if you live to far to deliver wood.

I donate at least a cord to my church every year. The men's group holds a charity banquet every January. A dry seasoned cord of birch has it's highest annual dollar value in late January and I know the proceeds get put to good use.

Well, I understand what Gzecc was saying. I went and read the ad. I understand why he gets little response. I would not answer that ad either. Especially after reading that it is a constant ad, and the OP has given him wood for three years. Sounds like he found an cheap way to get wood. Also sounds like he is using a guilt trip to get wood.

I am a vet too. I help people until they come to expect my help instead of helping themselves,, then I'm done.

Not telling anybody not to help him,, just don't get conned out of your hard work.

I'm a vet too, many of us are. But not all are fortunate. I think with a member vouching for his need we can accept this is not a con. Let's keep this thread on the positive helping note that it is intended to be.
