I have a majestic prefabricated firebox that is a corner fireplace. The front and side are open. Can I install any wood burning insert into there w/ a liner? If so, what can I do to close up the open side of the fire place. Will this look weird? Never seen someone do this, though I am having a hard time picturing what it would look like.

We need model number of the fire place and what insert you are planning on. But i would bet that the fireplace manufacturer says you cant do it which in my book means you cant. There are others here who see that differently though
Yes, this has been done. Last one I saw had a custom surround panel that wrapped around the side.

Any suggestions. It seems like an insert is just a wood stove anyways. I would prefer it looking less stoveish. I wana see fire. My utility bill is in the $120s in winter, though it spikes up, when we have to go aux heat.
yes but an insert is made to sit inside a fire box. A wood stove will sit outside of that box and be piped into it
Check the dimensions. It looks more like 42x 24 on the front and 22 x 24 on the side when going by brick count. You'll need a full liner in the chimney, but it looks like a big Regency, PE or Quad insert will work.
I am sorry bg how can you possibly say that it is ok to put an insert in that box? an insert needs to be put into a box not left with one side exposed. And we know that all instructions say you cant modify the zc box
I suggested earlier wrapping a custom surround. This is not a dangerous scenario as far as I can tell.
What type of surround? Who tested that? who approved that? There would be absolutely nothing about that that would be ul listed to code or insurable i am sorry. We have debated this general topic many times and whether i agree or not i generally can see your side of it but not this time.
How many custom surrounds have you put on inserts? Were they tested or approved? It's done all the time and quite safe if done professionally.

Someone else on he board had one of those and put a Buck stove in, Bucks can be used as a free stander or insert, it looked really good, can't for the life of me remember his screen name.
That (although i still would not do it) I can at least see the reasoning and there are clearances to go by so i can accept it as not totally irresponsible.
Adding a little to a surround is one thing custom fabricating a firebox side for a zc fireplace is not in any way the same thing and there is nothing in any instructions listing or code to support that it can be done.

What is the style of your home/interior and taste? I remember seeing some installs similar, but they were modern style wise.

What do you mean? Manufacturers instructions do that but with an insert you would need to go with standard unlisted stove clearance

Exactly. Custom surround would serve as heat shield dropping clearance to 12" to nearest combustible. Don't see any combustibles closer on that side.
There are arguments against putting an insert in a ZC fireplace but making a custom side surround is not one of them, IMHO.
My recommendation would be to take the whole thing out (looks a bit dated anyway) and replace it with either a stove or a EPA-approved ZC fireplace.

dont all instructions having to do with zc units say you cant modify the unit at all? Wouldnt adding a side be modifying it?

And that brick wall on the side could be a clearance issue doesn't look like there is an air space behind it
