not that I'm going to do it but I was sitting here tonight looking at my wood insert wondering if I were to install it outside fireplace vented like a regular woodstove, maybe surrounding it with some stonework if it would be put off as much heat as a regular woodstove anyone ever done this just curious?
Would a wood insert installed as a stand alone be the same as a wood stove?

It would but it would be an unlisted stove and would need 36" clearance and would be hard to insure ect

The Buck 91 actually comes with legs and is designed to be installed either way. I have it as an insert but it still sits out pretty good on the hearth. I left the surround off because I liked the "wood stove" look better than the insert look. Also think I get more heat from it this way.
Unless it was specifically made to be dual purpose, I'd think most inserts don't have quite the same side and rear panels for safety. I know out regency would look pretty "industrial" outside of the hearth opening.
