I really want to believe that is fresh air intake but somehow, well you know ! Because in the end it doesn't matter, even if the vent is direct but below the window, well you know ! Gotta love the surround., drapes and a metal shield of some kind. I'm surprised the left over Christmas tree isn't leaning against the stove, must have moved it for the photo.

The Southwick fire reminds of a call I had and the person needed to get more pressure from a cold propane tank and so put a line from it to a homemade burner to get the tank warmer but forgot to put any kind of regulator on it so when the tank got warm the flame got bigger. Now the fire from a thousand gallon tank letting off vapor is impressive, when its paired tank gets going too, well lets say there was no snow for quite some distance.

Even the hearth is umm...creative. Also probably using a dimmer switch or timer on his auger because of a board failure.

Seriously now.
My little Whitfield Prodigy 2 was haywired in like that by the folks I bought it from.
The were renovating an old house and the project got behind and the weather closed in.
The new heating system was not in yet, the drywall needed to be taped and mudded, paint had to dry and they needed heat.
They squirreled in a temporary thimble through a window that had not been replaced with new as yet and stoked up the little Whit and warmed the house.
Now theirs was a temp solution to an issue, but the one in the piccy looks like the work of some hasher.
