BK Princess bypass gasket

Can anyone tell me what size rope I need for the BK princess bypass gasket? Its got a few years on it now and it appears to be leaking more and more. Length and Diameter if you have it. I don't have a dealer in my state, or any joining state so I will be ordering online.

I believe it's 5/8" diameter, unsure on the length. BUT, it's a high density rope, and not exactly easy to find. Your best bet is probably OEM. I'd call Blaze King, explain the situation, and see if they'll let you order thru some dealer and have it drop shipped to you. Or PM BKVP and see if he has a suggestion.

IIRC, Mid Mountain is the OEM supplier.
 
Thanks for the replies guys. How about it @BKVP can you help me out? I need to order cat gaskets also, it will be cleaning time one day soon.

Don't quote me on this but I'm pretty sure the only time to pull the cat is for replacement. I don't think it needs removed for regular cleaning unless its not functioning properly.

Sorry for late response. We have been doing battle in Salt Lake the past few days. 5/8" and about 3 feet will do. Make certain you have gasket glue....

I understand, however I have to remove it on my parents princess when I clean the pipe. They have birds who build nests in the chimney cap every year. Better to be safe than sorry. I usually clean mine with a vacuum from the front as I have a 90 with a cleanout for cleaning the pipe.

@BKVP Do I need any special 5/8 gasket as others have mentioned? I have plenty of 5/8 door gasket here as thats what the buck used around the door. I always thought my bypass gasket was a flat "ribbon" style gasket-- I guess I didn't really look at it until I had problems on year two and by then it probably was!

Our's is dense, but why not try yours? And it's flat because a that 1/2" thick steel by pass plate is HEAVY!
 
My experience was that standard 5/8" rope doesn't work. I ended up using 1" stretched out a little and stuffed down in the gasket retainers until I got the right stuff, which was after winter was over. It was good for a few months.
 
How do you stuff it up in there? And what about the glue? There doesn't seem to be much space on the hinge side.

Thru the flue collar. I know there was no cat in it, and I think the bypass plate was out. It was my sister's King. The new gasket was easier.

Not sure how it will go with the 6" collar on the Princess.
 
I ordered my high density gasket from A-1 stoves in California,they order it through Blaze King,Blaze King ships to you. But the problem is, the gasket Blaze King sent me was NOT a high density gasket.Contacted Blaze King and was told that's all we have use it or send it back.The gasket was about $7.00 and the shipping was $17.00.Call around other stove shops in your area and ask for a high density gasket,that's how I found the correct one.I posted pictures on here a while back of a 5/8 high density gasket and the gasket Blaze King sent me.

Sounds good, I will give it a shot.. I also have PLENTY of larger stuff that is VERY dense. I am in the refractory industry so we have a ton of different fiber floating around. Sometimes it easier to just buy the right stuff even if you have a warehouse full of "similar" items. Sure wish I could make 3/4 dense rope work for the door- I got that in droves! Alas, it will work but only for a short time and then its no bueno. Thanks again, I will let yall know what I come up with.

Well, I got it swapped out today. I went ahead and gave the medium density stuff I had on hand a go. Went in fairly easy, although it would probably be easier if you were a trained proctologist. One note, I found a TON of ash hiding back there. While folks may say you dont need to remove either the cat OR the pipe to clean the stove I would have to disagree for my setup at least. Maybe not on the routine cleaning but I think for the once a year its worth it to pull whatever is easier to pull. I got a LOT of fine fine powder from the ledge both in front of and behind the bypass door. I would think the stuff against the back wall could insulate the bimetallic coil and cause a somewhat sluggish or lagging thermostat action--maybe I'm wrong. Either way, food for thought. Probably all wood related anyhow :eek: but I'll ::P..
