Man o man is this stuff giving a terrific burn. It has been seasoned for 2 years and is just raging. It seems to be burning better than black cherry. Burning super hot and real nice coals. Checked the btu charts but could not find the rating.
I think it's pretty close to Black, IIRC. I shoulda loaded some Cherry, instead of that Oak. Just a small load but it's getting a bit warm in here...73 now.
That is why I like having a variety of woods at my disposal. I found that when it get below 10 degrees and I am home, I actually will use red maple as the coal beds don't build like the other hardwoods. That way I can get 4 loads in for the day. Oak and Locust I can only get away with 3 a day.
The sweet cherry is just blowing my mind. Got a solid six hours and the burn was real hot for about 5 of those hours.
Had a couple of dead cherry I took early this summer that throw a ton of heat and 4 more to take from the neighbor. Anybody ever heard of cherry birch? Got about a cord of it from the dump and I'm not sure if thats what it is. Definitely cherry from the smell but bark like a white birch.
Cherry birch is another name for Black birch, which can also be called mahogany birch. But the wood in no way resembles White birch. If you picked up something from a dump, just post the pics here.

The bark peels like white birch. All my son and I could do to put it in the pickup, 6 rounds a load and 5 loads. Stood the splitter vert. until they were small enough to lift and then they exploded when they split.
If you have Black birch it sits next to Shagbark hickory for heat output. Its heavy, hard and the bark looks almost exactly like Sweet cherry.
It has one very distinctive characteristic. It produces Oil of Wintergreen. Cant miss it if you are peeling bark. Even crushed twigs smell extremely strong.
Black birch and sweet cherry do look similar however the lenticils on sweet cherry are thinker and longer. Sweet cherry also has a paper bark where black birch the bark is usually about 1/4 of an inch thick. Black birch is top of the heap for me. Nothing and I mean nothing beats a 50/50 mix of black birch and black locust. That is just and amazing combo.
