I've been researching wood inserts with cooktops, and so far have found these units:

Regency i2400
IronStrike (Country) Performer C210
Lopi Revere
Lope 1750

But multiple people have told me those medium inserts, if running efficiently, are going to be too hot for my 400 sq ft living space.

Does anyone know of a smaller size wood insert that has a cooktop space?

Thanks for any input!

Even a smaller insert will need to be run hot to burn efficiently and safely. A smaller insert will give you somewhat less heat but it will suffer from short burns times. Are you only trying to heat 400 sqft or is your home larger? What kind of fireplace do you have? Dimensions?

Cooking on an insert is difficult because it all depends on how much of the top sticks out from the fireplace. Maybe take a look at the Regency Hearth Heater if your hearth is deep enough.

How tall is the fireplace opening? I'm wondering if you could fit a Jotul F602CB or a Morso 2B in there.

The opening is 24" (h) x 36" (w), and a 5" drop down inside the fireplace.

Those models (Jotul/Morso/Intrepid) are stoves. Do you guys mean put a stove inside the fireplace?? Never heard of that - is it done?

Some small stoves can fit very nicely in a fireplace.

Its done a lot, and if you have them sitting half in/out of the fireplace the cook top can be very useful. It can be a very classy look. Use google images and search "wood stove in fireplace" should see dozens of photos.

Did you choose a stove?
