Enviro M55ci-fs & Harman XXV owners: Possible stupid question I have.

I need to make a purchase decission and it is down to two stoves.

To all the M55 cast iron free standing and Harman XXV owners, please correct me if I am wrong;
I thought I read someplace that these two stoves do not require a hearth pad to protect the flooring against heat, but instead I might want to purchase something, a pad of sorts, to protect the flooring from ash. Is this a true statement or will the floor below get too hot and require a hearth pad?
 
XXV install calls for non combustible pad 6 inches beyond front and sides, 0 clearance on rear
 
For clearances to combustibles you must consult the manual and your local township. Not a source you somewhat remember. Some insurance companies also require notification.
 
From Envrio manual for M55 fs
FLOOR PROTECTOR REQUIREMENTS The floor protector should be 20 x 30 inches minimum and must extend 8 inches in front of stove. Material must be 3/8 inch minimum thickness, non-combustible, and meet UL standards.

So this does not sound like a standard hearth mat, but at 3/8 inch thick it might be more of a mat to protect against the occassional glowing ash that might fall out.
 
You can buy hearth pads from stove stores
But a lot of people on this forum build there own .
My stove is set in a alcove that looks like a very old
fire place the hearth is 2x4 on edge with a 3/4 ply covering
then 1/2 slate on top and the sides trimmed in pine
I have used it for 12 years under my ef3 with no problems .
It's entirely up to you how you go about it by Envro calls for
some type of floor protection .

I made mine out of plywood, hardie backer board and porcelain tile. It is about 1" of non combustible materials and definitely meets requirements for a pellet stove.
