If you bought a stove certified to be at least 75% thermally efficient you can file for a $300 federal tax credit. Since most people are in the middle of doing their taxes now I thought I'd post this as a reminder.

I'll include a link to my manufacturer's page with the tax credit details. If you have the link handy for your stove manufacturer's tax details page please post that here too.

Does the 30-NC meet the 75% thermally efficient requirement? I bought one last Feb, so I could use this tax credit.

Thanks,

I don't have all the answers; but I get the sense the manufacturer has to have the stove certified (by the EPA probably) at 75% efficient or better to qualify. As such the manufacturers should have this data and the tax info on their respective websites. If you find the data for your 30-NC please post the link here for everyone's convenience.

This tax credit expired in mid 2014 and then was extended to 12/31/14. so as long as you purchased your stove in 2014 and its epa certified then you can claim the credit. Who knows if it will be extended to 2015. I had Woodstock charge me in full prior to 12/31 to ensure i could claim the credit.

If any one can find the Info on whether this applies to the NC post here.... I spent a little time looking this morning but couldnt come up with any info.
maybe

Maybe Mike from ESW can chime in if he knows.

Does this apply to used stoves as well?

That's a good stove; and it's rated 80.5% efficient. You have to include the manufacturer's efficiency certification for the stove and a receipt (proof of purchase) with your IRS Form 5695. Again, I'm no expert, but from what I read if you have proof of purchase I think you could claim it. Somebody please correct me if this is incorrect. Read Grisu's link above.

I just breezed thru the info. It says "biomass" does this mean it includes pellet burners?

Yes. Certified Pellet burners are included.

It's gonna take more than a post from Mike to get the credit.

This is what is needed from the manufacturer according to the link posted above:

"A manufacturer's certification statement must contain the following information:

  • The name and address of the manufacturer.
  • Identification of the class of qualified energy property (Biomass-Burning Stove) in which the property is included.
  • The make, model number and any other appropriate identifiers of the stove.
  • A statement that the product is an eligible qualified energy property.
  • A manufacturer's certification statement must contain a declaration, signed by a person currently authorized to bind the manufacturer in these matters, in the following form: "Under penalties of perjury, I declare that I have examined this certification statement, and to the best of my knowledge and belief, the facts are true, correct, and complete."
  • These documents don't need to be attached to your tax return, but you should keep them for your records."

Note that this doesn't need to go to with your tax return but that you need it in case of an audit (which is the way I read the last bullet point.

Since I bought two stoves last year, I assume I can claim $500?

(and thanks for this post, you have saved me big bucks!)

Based on how I read it the federal tax credit is $300 max lifetime. But I wasn't paying attention to detail for multiple stoves.

I sent an e-mail yesterday, but it's the weekend and I don't expect a reply until tomorrow. I'll let you know what I find out.
