Harman 52i installed last fall, burned 3 tons of Turmans so far. Couple days ago, got 6 blink error and stove would shut down. Figured it was time to clean, although I was hoping to get to end of season before I had to do the exhaust flu. First time having unit out of the insert enclosure, so not sure how dirty 3 tons ought to be. Do this pic look about right? ESP cleaned up well, and is burning pretty good now, in fact it running about 25 deg hotter right now. image.jpg

So you've only burnt 3tons since last fall

Your supposed to do it every ton. I do mine monthly. It looks bad you let it go that far thats for sure

This.

I clean mine ever 4 weeks and have never gone 3 tons before cleaning exhaust so I can't tell you what that would/should look like.

I've burned six tons so far this season. the ash pan in my PB 105 holds about a ton so whenever I empty it I pull the probe and clean it and usually do a quick clean of the firepot. Just did a complete cleaning on Monday, including chimney. Three tons is way to long to wait to clean the ESP.

Depends on what you burn there are folks who probably could go all season maybe even longer. Some can only go a ton or so. Theres nothing magic about every ton cleaning its pretty random someone wrote it years ago and its perpetuated.

Well, that is true as the Harman manual says Yearly or more frequently depending on ash build up. The only way you know if you need to go more frequently than a year, is to check it prior to that. I know I have ashy pellets this year, so I do it once a month to be safe. Last year I checked it after a ton, and I had decent pellets, so I was good for another ton or so.

I guess what we should say is that it should be checked on a regular basis to see if you need to perform a cleaning.

Thanks for the helpful comments. Yes, I was under the impression that I might get a season before pulling the insert out and cleaning the exhaust flu, but don't think that is going to happen. My house is over 4000 sq ft, stove sits in a great room with very tall ceilings, so most of the heat is going upstairs. As a result, the stove never throttels down, so when it gets cold, I can us 3 bags a day easy. I think those that have once a season flu cleanings are blessed with a smaller and more contained area. Was hoping someone would wiegh in on experience with Turman hardwood pellets. I purchased 4 tons when I got the stove, so have not had the need to buy a different brand yet this year. Was told they burn pretty clean. Tractor Supply here in town is getting a shipment in tomorrow, may try some of those.

You can only go upon your experience. That pic doesn't look too bad, but the evidence is that you got an error code and the stove is running alot hotter than before. So, I'd say you need to clean more often than once every 3 tons. Or maybe adapt your cleaning routine. Can you do the LBT every month, instead, perhaps that will allow you to run a whole seasons without having to pull the insert.
