Just get any Hickory out of contact with any possible source of moisture.

This! If you leave that stuff touching dirt it will disintegrate before your eyes. Fantastic fuel, but it will return to dirt in short order on the forest floor.

I had some 7 year seasoned shagbark the first year burning with my insert. When I put just a few pieces on the stove went nuclear. When I think of what the stove temperatures were then I cringe now. It is good wood and burns a long time.

A great free score close to home, am I right?

I'm thinking pignut hickory. Hard to tell from photos. Doesn't look shaggy enough for shagbark.

Looks just like the hickory that I split up this past spring. I've not burned any hickory yet, but next winter I'll find out just how good it burns. Pretty tough stuff. Glad I had a hydraulic splitter. Shredded more than split really.

I got a bunch of shag and bitternut hickory last summer clearing a ROW w/ my dad.... one of my favorite parts is taking the detritus from the splitter.... soaking it in water... and putting it in a smoke box in my grill.... yum :)

yes, ya got to soak it... otherwise, instead of cruising at 200F... the grill is at 450... with the propane off. not good for smoking chicken..

Ive got hickory in the stove right now... only down side I can see from using it... is if the stove puffs back.... my mind is on bacon for the rest of the night..
