https://www.hearth.com/talk/threads/neighbor-upset-with-my-smoke-dragon.133758/

Well this time she call the village complaining that I was burning trash, treated wood, all kinds of garbage. I talked to the inspector to come over now and look. I have nothing to hide. He believes me and trust me that i'm telling the truth. But asked if he could take a look just so when she calls again he can tell her.So much for being MR. NICE GUY, no more glove are off and ready. Did say how much I cant wait to I move out of this cold to a warm country setting?

People get cranky when they freeze, month after month. And if she somehow found out that it's 74* in your living room, that's gonna annoy her even more. Anonymously send her a pair of long johns. Maybe that will help. ;lol
Yeah, I came down here from WI; I don't ever wanna go anywhere it's colder than here in the winter. I just can't, especially now that I'm 30 yrs. older. ;lol

That and pure jealously that your getting free heat and there paying big dollars to freeze. Sound like the story I saw on the news about a woman in philly. Her neighbor who was a lawyer complained that her fireplace insert which looked to me like a regency and EPA certified was smoking out the neighborhood. Long story short the lawyer filed some kind of papers and the judge sided with him and she was only able to use here insert during certain hours of certain days. She's trying to fight it but in the process racking up huge court costs. I'll stop here before I get ugly!

I still like the idea that came up in your other thread; Rocket mass heater. The exhaust is so hot, it will probably go straight up very quickly...

The more these matters end up in court or with township or county officials, the more chance of lawmakers, most of whom probably just think we're a bunch of backwoods antiquated hicks for wanting to burn wood, the more chance they will just ban wood burning all together, especially if there is some "group" somewhere (there always is) to say how bad wood burning is, no matter what the truth is. Remember when you thought they'd never ban smoking in bars....guess again.... It would be best if it could be settled without involving authorities. Granted, the women in question here seems unwilling to listen (i'd say compromise, but that implies she has something to brig to the table aside from negativity), she just has a grudge for whatever reason, it makes it more difficult, but not unsolvable.

I didnt read the original thread but can she really smell the smoke in her house with all of her windows and doors shut? I can see if someone is burning in a fire pit in the summer and your neighbors have their windows open but in the winter????

Most people just don't like breathing smoke, whether it be from other folks' cigarettes or wood stoves. If we don't burn clean, they will stop us from burning at all. Think about it.

I get cranky when I have to breath in smoke all day... Or my clothes stink..

The title of your thread says a lot ("Smoke Dragon") and your previous post tells me a lot also ("30 year old (stove)", "Well the smoke is going right toward her house to the east and hanging low."). You are in the suburbs, and the inspector dropped by to see if you can take a hint. You are on the wrong side of this argument, and the sooner you just get a better, cleaner burning stove the easier your life will be.

When you are far away from others, the rules are different than when you are close by others. You may not like that, but that is the way it is.

I understand what you are saying and I did pick up a lopi regency last night for 200 but I just can't install it with all this cold right now.

Smoke dragons can burn clean. My stove is over 30 years old (morso 1125) and my neighbors house is less than 20 feet from my chimney but they do not complain. Burn dry wood and hot fires and smoke will not be an issue. Outside of a few minutes on reload you rarely see smoke coming out my chimney.

True, older stoves can burn cleaner, but not nearly as cleanly as a modern stove. I've read that with good practices it might go down to 25gms/hr. particle emissions. Neighbor complaints can just be a level of tolerance. Some folks don't mind a big yard light at a neighbor 50 ft away and others can't stand them at 1000 ft away.

I am one of those people who can just not tolerate smoke. I have asthma and it really messes with my lungs and stings my eyes. I can't even be downwind of a smoker. I love burning wood, but I made sure to get one of the cleanest burning stoves on the market. My stove burns so clean, you would not be able to tell me if it's even lit from outside my house, but I have two neighbors who's fireplaces are constantly spewing out white smelly smoke. It bothers me on several levels, the first being how unhealthy that is for anyone who wants to take a deep breath and secondly, like other have said, eventually the wrong person is going to complain and we all will pay the price. I would hate to see wood burning banned, but people live close together these days and smoke does not just stay in your own yard. At least in the winter, the air is thin enough that most of the smoke rises. In the summer I am baffled even more by the outside fire pits. Hot smoke coming in your windows on a hot humid day just freakin' sucks.

I have to chime in agreeing that it seems you're unfortunately not going to win on this subject in the 'burbs. 75 feet is pretty dang close and there are so many options to burn efficiently today, it just seems more worth your time to win the widowed neighbor over and live pleasantly.

I'll second the point on asthma - it does not take much smoke to set mine off badly.

My first thought is to get out of Chicago and Illinois all together. Then you've solved more problems than just your wood stove. Only solution I see to the smoke problem is a newer stove.. Good luck to ya

Westywood your right about Chicago and IL but until my youngest finishes High School (3 more years) then I will think about how far south Im going.Im only 50 so I still have to work but the joints say get out of the cold. I have worked outside all my life and can not take winter anymore!
