He likes to sit on the stove when it's cooled down to just the last few coals. At first I worried he might try jumping up there when it's really hot but somehow he seems to know when it's cooled down enough to lie on.

Goofy cat! Mine will rub up against the stove when it's running full bore. Their fur is good insulation I guess.

Mark Twain's quote means the cat, once burned, will stay off the stove at all times, assuming that the stove will always burn. But cats are smarter than that.
 
Mine liked the area under the stove. Even at full blast.
