Thats not cherry, more like red pine

Don't think it's red pine... look at those horizontal stripes in the bark.

I'm also not great at identification, so take that for what it's worth.

There were no leaves around where you picked it up?

Split some and post another pic......

That is, with 99% certainty, black birch. Even though it looks like it's been dead for a while, you should still get a whiff of wintergreen when you cut it. Black birch is one of my absolute favorite woods to harvest and burn. In addition, all of the braces in my timber-frame house are black birch. The heartwood looks like cherry but is lighter in color when finished.

Cherry. I'd say......but we do not have Black Birch in these parts. Color is a little "off" for cherry but note the "gum pockets" in the heart wood, very common for cherry.

Note the larger "sheets" here^^ like yes Pin Cherry. OP's pics show a flakier bark......like Black Cherry or Black Birch.

I have black cherry, it doesn't look like mine, I'd like to see it split, I've never seen pin cherry or black birch firewood....
Bark resembles silver maple to me, but what do I know.....;?

The two bedfellows sharing the log hoop right now. My 2 favs.
Not to confuse this thread, but this is Shagbark and Black birch. The hickory is on the left side. Aside from their aromas they could almost be twins.20150226_110928.jpg
