It is one of those tricky trees. Depending upon where it is growing its characteristics are quite different..

Honey Locust has thorn clusters growing out from the bark, I don't see any here. It's easier to tell what it isn't.

Red Maple. Red Maples can have bark anywhere from nearly as smooth as beech to nearly as shaggy as Shagbark Hickory.

One pic has a branch/twig in foreground with the characteristic opposite branching.
The bark color and texture is darker than Beech and the sapwood/heartwood ratio is right on for maple.
