old, etched bath tub fix?

Our son needs to fix his old, etched bath tub. Has anyone ever tried those handyman type wipe-on liquid kits that are sold? If you have, does the finish hold up for a long time?

Other than being etched, the tub looks great. He's not all that interested in putting a liner in it.
 
What type? Steel, fiberglass/acrylic, composite, cast iron, other?
 
Sorry - as near as I know it is porcelain on cast iron (or steel).
 
Interior or exterior surface of the tub, is it a claw foot type tub or a regular installed tub, there is a coating company called Hawk Laboratories that I have used for re coating tub and tile that works very well for refinishing worn porcelain or acrylic tubs and tile. If he is handy and can follow their system it works great. www.hawk labs.com
 
There used to be several kits available for refinishing tubs of that type as well as companies to do the same. Dropping a plastic over the top is easier and faster of course, so there is where things have gravitated to.
