I would imagine it has a fridge or freezer as main unit and his car would look something like this.

NW Fuel, you forgot the blower and manifold on the bottom of that rack.

It needs a flat surface on top to cook on.

kind of like going to space in a craft built by the lowest bidder

Red Neck Heatilator version 2.0 in the works?!

You youngsters may not know it but that is a late 1970s Heatilator insert to extract useful heat from a fireplace. The top and bottom openings were designed to line up with vent openings above and below the glass fireplace doors. It could be equipped with a blower that blew air into a manifold along the bottom of those tubes or could be operated as a natural circulation heater. In its day it was considered to be pretty exciting high tech.
