so this past December before x-mas my friend had a huge pine tree cut down, he gave me all the wood because people around here think it's crazy to burn soft woods. Anyway I literally split it all the day after I got it and just threw it into a large heep, I split the round large like 8" diameter and the plan was to stack it in the spring and use it as shoulder wood next fall if it was ready. Curiosity got the better of me today and I took a split out, and to my surprise it was paper lite. I resplit the piece and using my moisture meter found out it was 16%... The pile has been under the snow uncovered since the day I split it image.jpg

Yup, looks dry to me confirming the MM reading.

I am guessing you're somewhere north and east of Massachusetts going by your zipcode, looks about right to me.

If you stack that stuff up off the ground all summer covered on top you'll have it down to your local equilibrium moisture content (EMC) by mid September or so.

This will burn AWESOME fall 2015 if you can keep it dry.

Hmm....wonder what my cottonwood will be?
Split last sept/oct and split and stacked all winter? Something tells me not as good.
This is quite encouraging, I have monster white pines in the woods that snap off and are laying everywhere. Never bothered with them. I hate pitch.
Maybe I'll go snooping.

I have found that with bigger white pine the heart wood dries very quickly but the sapwood can take a little longer to dry.

I have been an oak snob for several years but am becoming a fan of pine. I will now take pine over some of the lower quality hardwoods.

Are you sure you did not hit yourself with that 8 lb maul. Are you sure your wood is dry.
