It is crazy what people will pay for an old splitter sold old mtd 20 ton for 750 and got a brand new 22 ton dirty hand tools one for 900 from lowes on sale + 10% off coupon. really like the log cradle over the flat I beam also like the quiet kohler engine. I didn't need to sell the mtd but a buddy convinced me" with the brigg's getting tired put it on Craig's list and it will be gone in a week". It took 2 days and I bet I had 50 calls on it, for $150 difference why would anyone buy a old very well used splitter?

Hmmm... Maybe time to put my 1988 MTD/Duerr splitter on craigslist.

I would give it a shot mine wasn't quite that old, guessing 1996??

Nah. That old dog is family. And has a replacement engine on it a few years ago and a new high pressure line this year. When it is done splitting my old self is done splitting too.

I can respect that. My thought was when I replaced the engine it would have cost as much or more then selling the mtd and buying new, and not having to turn a wrench helped make the decision.

Yeah a few years ago I caught a Chonda at Harbor Freight for $88 bucks. Thing runs like a scalded ape and starts first pull. I hated that five horse Briggs it had on it from day one.

You done real good.

We put a 6.5hp HF Chonda on a hay elevator, she purrs like a kitten. Started on the 2nd pull when new and first pull after that.

I figured my Chonda would be junk and for the price bought two of them. The other one is still sitting in the box seven years later. The one on the splitter just rocks and keeps on rocking.

I bought a Chonda (Predator) for my aged Troy Bilt cultivator tiller than had a bug chaser Tecumseh 3.5 horse on it. Got the motor for 65 bucks with a coupon. Runs like a top. You can't beat the Chonda Lufan engines, Got one on my pressure washer too. Had a Honda that puked.

I see used splitters on craiglist all the time around here and they are as much as - and sometimes more than - what they cost new. Crazy.

I'm thinking (maybe without basis) that honda engines aren't as good as they once were. I have a GC on my other tiller thats a piece of crap. Been one issue after another (underwarranty until this year). If the issues continue, that will get a Pred too.

I have a GC on my other tiller
The GC version is a homeowner grade engine. The GX version is the industrial grade. There is a vast difference in the build quality between the two. I am no shill for Honda, but the industrial grades are pretty legendary. The GC is on par with Briggs, Tech, etc.

I read a lot about the issues with the GC's on the web, from carb issues to timing issues. They don't seem to like the low grade fuel we now have to live with.

How is the Dirty Hands splitter? I was looking at one myself but haven't been able to pull the trigger

Lots of talk on here about the Dirty Hands splitter, try using the Search box, I'm sure you'll find plenty of info.
