Never seen a tree do like this hickory did.theres big holes all up and down it. What you guys think happened?

I see that all the time on beechs up in NH. There is blight that infect the wood and creates scabs and holes all through it. The blight usually enters through a scar in the tree and unfortunately bears will climb the trees when they start producing nuts and their claw marks will introduce the blight. For a few years after you can see the scars real well but eventually the tree dies from it.
Well I got the hole tree bucked up. I thought it was dead or dying but I was wrong. Solid as can be just weird looking. Also clipped a small maple I was actually hoping to save but oh well. Probably have to borrow the uncles hydro on this one

That's some fine looking hickory. Don't get a lot of that here. A lot of shagbark though.
Don't dwell on that too long. A diseased tree isn't doing anybody a favor. You are probably better off with it gone.
