I picked these logs up last fall from in town. I can't figure what it is exactly. I'm thinking box elder? Its heavy. Much heavier than the hickory of comparable size I have. Splits okay with a wedge and sledge but takes quite a few hits once busted up using the fiskars to split the splits. Measured splits last night at 18% moisture so these logs aren't just full of water. Any ideas? Thanks.

Not box elder for sure. I wanna say red oak but I can't say for sure from the pictures. I'll let other take a shot at it.
 
Impossible to tell from such bad pictures. Split one open, take more pics in daylight.

After I split some more I believe it is red oak. Anyone have any suggestions for splitting it by hand? Had a 20" diameter log with no knots that wouldn't split. My wedge would bounce out on the second strike. Ended up halving it with the saw....
 
Start from the outside slabbing off 3-4 inch wide sections from edge. As you get close to those side branches, you may need wedges or hydros.

Chainsaw an indentation 1 inch or so on opposite ends to give your wedges a start so that they don't bounce off and use 2 wedges to do the job. It works every time....
