ASH TEST I DID ON PREMIUM PELLETS THIS YEAR

if anyone is interested thought i would post a ash test i did this year on some premium pellets.test results are from one bag.i tested 1 bag 10 different times and took the average.

Did you clean your stove completely for every different pellet?
 
I'm not sure you can count that as an accurate benchmark. Too many variables. Next year who knows what the suppliers will be pelletizing. Its a good example of how things went for you this year, though.
 
stove is a harman XXV 2 years old and was cleaned thoroughly after each bag.blazers and somersets are not available where i live.alot of variables are always possible in any test.and yes,every year pellet companies can change there pellets as well.just wanted to post my results for some who are asking about ash amounts to see.you can get a better idea by looking at the ash in the bottles from a bag burned opposed to just reading numbers on bags.i see forum members all the time say how they buy the same pellets year after year and the ash drastically changes.this was just a fun test to see what it would look like.why,you ask.because we can,lol

as far as " will they change the batch next time around?":rolleyes:
to me it's not revelant since your testing was for this year... Not last year or next year..
this was an "accurate benchmark" souly for this season.
so you'll do another test for the naysayers next season maybe and we will see how that unfolds...

Good testing. I have been using Hamer's for 3 years now. Maybe I will try one of the brands like Turman's next year to compare. Thanks for doing this.
 
Great test!! Thanks for taking the time tontest and for posting the results! I had already decided what pellets I was going to get next year, and this test helps confirm my decision..
 
I took the total weight of ash from the pan and vacuumed from my stove this year, 80% of which was FSU which have lower ash compared to the others that I burnt maybe 10 bags of each.

Total weight of ash 47.0 lb, 5 tons burnt = 10,000 lb.

Ash = 0.0047%

Ash per bag (for comparison to O/P) = 3 oz.

Not bad for a sampling of Big Box pellets and sticking mostly with what burnt cleanest.
 
Thanks for sharing....how do you enjoy the XXV? I'm not sure if I should get the XXV which my wife prefers...or the Hearthstone Manchester (at a great price/showroom model). The dealer told me that the Hearthstone performs better with higher grade pellets, compared to the Harman which will burn any type of pellet (good or bad) and perform pretty well also. Thanks for any help...I've been browsing this forum for a while and I'm ready to purchase soon. Thanks for your help
 
Very helpful and mirrors the results I had this year for those brands that I tried that are on your list. In my case, I left the settings exactly the same and let one brand run out, clean the stove the same way each time, and dump in the next batch. The average outside temperatures were very similar throughout so the stove was burning consistently during my trying different brands. My experience with Vermont Wood pellets is very similar to Turman's, although the Turman's produced a little more heat. Maine's Choice would be at the bottom of your list. They produce gobs of ash and some pesky carbon deposits.

Pretty funny since I found Maine's Choice to be cleaner burning and less ash than this year's Currans - at the same heat output. Not Saying MC's were good, just better than the other crap I had. But, since I had already pre-paid the Currans (at a higher price than I could have bought the MC for from Wally World), I was stuck with them.
