I have been thinking about trying to purchase tractor trailer loads of pellets direct from regional pellet distributors.

Anyone have contact information for regional pellet distributors for high quality pellets like Turman, Pacific Clean Fire, and LGs? Cutting out the middle man should save a buck or two for friends in the neighborhood that heat with wood pellets.

I tried last year to buy direct won't sell to the public . Need to have a business account . Plus good luck pony up the money from your neighborhood . Most people these days buy with credit . Plus do u have the space to store and etc. . What I have done the last 2 season I buy about 12 tons from Home Depot (currently have 8 tons of blazer) and sell them in the winter months this year $100 bucks A ton profit last year was getting $180 ton profit equals costinge nothing to heat my home for the season

good for you but not so good for the people that have to pay 100.00 bucks more a ton.
HD should limit purchases to discourage gouging in the winter..
I wouldn't buy from you just on principal.
Thankfully most HD's get a tractor trailer load per week so you can't buy all the pellets to re-sell.
just my opinion..

I buy in the summer ..

Wouldn't buy from you either out of principal.....you overbuy to crunch the supply and then resell to the same folks just like you who are trying to save money...to each their own though!

OP - I was trying to organize something like this last actually through Lowes, it would have summer prices minus 20 bucks a ton. So was a pretty decent deal, I think it came out roughly 200 a ton but I had to front the cost.

I ended up not doing it because we discovered softwoods burned better in our stove and had trouble getting those through lowes.

If you get more info, would you mind posting it here?

Ah, was that you on CL trying to organize? I was going to try to participate, but then got sidetracked by something else (contractors for roofing and windows), and by the time I got back to pellets, it was probably too late.

Oh we have lawn mowers and outdoor grills at HD, but also still have pellets. They keep getting moved around so you have to ask where they are this time, but at least they are still available (at least at some NH HD's)

Yea the couple southern nh HD's around me still have them and some of the local guys too, who were gouging prices on garbage NEWP's in the fall preaching shortage. Hope they choke on them.

yeah.. guess if you gonna gouge people it's best to buy the good stuff so as to be sure someone will buy them.

Guy at HD in Brewster, ny said they will now carry pellets year round. This was last Friday.

Saw some MWP in WalMart this past weekend. Was surprised they usually just have them for a couple months.

DLavigne is providing a service and no one has to buy from him if they don't want to. Even if he's charging $100 more than he paid, he's storing them, and he paid for them, so he has cost of carry. That eats away at his $100 gross profit. Also, he's not causing any shortage as he buys in the Summer, which allows HD to add more to its stash. If anything he's diversifying the supply when the actual crunch comes. Instead of criticizing him, I think he deserves plaudits for providing a service.

Besides if he's only making a $100 off Blazers from HD, which he got at $239 a ton, that's not too bad, DF pellets typically go for over $300 a ton. Who's complaining? I wouldn't.

Anyways. I'd be in for a group buy if anyone wants to organize it? The more we burn though, the pickier I am getting about the pellets we buy though. Can we try to get a softwood, maybe those blazers?

I'll echo that and point out that for those who are not able to adequately plan, he is providing a very valuable service - I'll bet his customers are glad to buy decent pellets at that time and price.

As to those who have trouble with this principle, I'll presume you work for a charity rather than a commercial enterprise of some sort, and thank you for your service.

Supply + Demand + Forethought = Small Business FTW.

I think most folks take issue to him/her repeatedly chiming in about it. Search their past postings its all they talk about.

I can certainly agree Jeff! I guess im looking at it as its not an actual business at all. Id be willing to bet the dude doesnt cut any profits with uncle sam as a real business owner does. Just a guy with extra storage gouging during the cold months. And hey, good for him. Sucks for the real small business owner who does have to pay those taxes. But to each their own. I wouldnt waste my time on that guy for other personal reasons.
