Yea, saw it yesterday, auger and everything...but they don't sell pellets!

There are 2 manufacturers, Traeger and another. Both work the same and bot sell pellets (flavored) via websites. You don't want to use heating pellets, you want to use flavor imparted pellets. I have a Traeger tailgater (portable pellet grill) and love it.
 
I watched the video on the traeger. They look fun to use
 
Don't know about fun but they do work well. Heat up quick and do a good job of grilling meat, fish and poultry. beats charcoal time wise and propane (which I never use anyway) for sure. Imparts a good flavor.
 
You can do much better direct from Trager or the other builder. I paid less than 500 for mine.
 
There are far more than 2 pellet grill manufacturers out there. besides treager, the original I believe, you have Memphis (part of Harman I think), Mak, Rec Tec, Cookshack, Smoking Brothers, Blazin Grill works, Danson/Louisiana, Yoder, Royall, Pellet Pro, GMG, Sawtooth, Grillson. and no doubt a few I have forgotten.

I have been using Hamers in mine with good results, before you use a heating pellet, do some homework and make sure you are happy with the answers you are given as to where the raw material for the pellets is sourced from, do they use fillers, or old scraps, how do they lube dies if they are needed, a lot of them use a vegetable oil.

Look around and spend some time doing some research if you are interested in a pellet grill, you will find one for almost any budget, from 4 or 5 hundred to a couple thousand

If you google pellet grills you can find a place where you can buy the pellet part of it for a little over 200.00. This includes the hopper auger, auger motor, thermostat, igniter etc which is seen on the side of many of these grills or combo smoker/grill units. You can get the same basic flavor buy putting wet pieces of wood of your choice in a gas grill.
 
I have a traeger but only because I got it for an amazing deal.

If I didn't get the deal I would have went with another brand. I really like the Daniel Boone from Green Mountain Grills.

Is the Black Olive the ceramic Egg Style cooker? I remember seeing a video of them, it looked interesting, just wasn't sure it would be big enough for me.

Yes it is the pellet version of the Green egg.
If you want a big and very rugged pellet smoker take a look at Yoders YS1500
Weighimg in at a whopping 667 lbs it is a tank!

Friend of mine who smokes in an electric smoker picked up a Trager a while ago. We did a comparison smoke: 1 brisket each in his electric, the pellet smoker and me in my wood/charcoal smoker.

The pellet smoker was the loser by a mile. Not nearly enough smoke taste was imparted by the time the meat was done. I think it has to do with the pellets being both the heat source and the smoke source so the smoke cuts out once the unit is holding its temp.. Wood/charcoal was the crowd's choice for best brisket - but not by that much, as the electric does/did a fine job as well.
 
Not all pellet grills are equal. I thought the olive was going to be too small too but it cooks so fast! Or has the ability to. I smoked my thanksgiving and Christmas turkeys on it last year and did a 15lb roast, smoking was awesome. Grilling is a pleasure. Self igniting. Actually cooks over a flame and all the juices stay in the meat. A big winner in my book!
 
I currently have a Traeger and a Green Mountain. The GMG is definitely much more controlled heat and fluctuates plus or minus 1 degree from the set temp. The Traeger, even with the upgraded digital,board can be very erratic, and doesn't hold temp well when opening unit. Much less mass than the GMG. The GMG eats through pellets faster, and the Traeger sips on them. GMG better job at higher heat settings and can go to 600 degrees. Traeger to 450, but struggling. Smoke wise, the Traeger is more intense on the smoke setting, but again erratic in the temp swings. These quibbles are well documented over at forums such as pelletheads.com etc. And there are many smokers both professional and amateur which will use heating pellets such as Turmans which are pure oak. Traeger pellets use a base wood of either alder (west coast) or oak (east coast) and add 20 percent flavored woods. Some brands such as Lumberjack will use pure woods for pellets.
 
Its the traeger I saw at HD. The pellets are 20.00 for a 20 lb bag!
 
I wonder if I could dry out the acorns in my yard and burn them in it.
 
My local stove store stocks a large variety of hardwood pellets for pellet grill/smokers.
