I posted a thread not long ago about picking up a husky 254 for next to nothing. I adjusted the carb got it running and after a few tanks of fuel I noticed the carb needed readjusting .I watched a few you tube vids on it and a couple on as and tried to readjust it . Got no response , so I check the air filter , fuel line and filter all were in very good shape. Does this sound like the jets are bad ? I know the carb was rebuilt , but I'm thinking a new carb may be in order.
 
Specifically what are the symptoms you're seeing?
 
I knew I forgot something lol. It lacks power in the cut and when I went to adjust the low speed jet all I got was the saw dying out clockwise but it didn't gain any rpms when turned opposite just wanted to die out also. Not sure if that's normal or not but I thought that it would load up some when turned counterclockwise
Edit: I'm not real gifted at tuning a carb I'm mainly going by what I read and have seen on some instructional vids . The rings and piston are clean as whistle also

Have you done a compression check? Is the spark arrester screen nice and clean?
 
No on the comp test . The screen has been removed. Tried something a little different last night and opened all three jets up one full turn. Started it of course the idle was very high so I adjusted it just to where the chain was barely moving and readjusted the low jet clockwise til it almost died and opposite and it started loading up pretty good. Tried to find middle of the road on it but I ran out of time. I'll do more tonite, like I said I gifted with that part of owning and operating but I learn pretty quick

Three jets? Only two of the carb adjustment screws are jets -- the two that are right next to each other. The one closer to the cylinder is the low speed/idle mixture, and the one further from the cylinder is the high speed mixture. The third screw sets the idle speed by adjusting the minimum opening of the throttle butterfly, not by changing the mixture.

Anyhow it sounds like you're on the right track. Let us know how it goes.

Will do and I meant to say I ain't gifted at it. I can make a chain sharp as a razor tho lol ( by hand )
 
I tried to get it dialed in again tonite with no luck. I even had my , he works on small engines as a hobby try it out and he had no luck either. I believe I'm going to take it to the dealer and have him try it out. I'm thinking maybe a bad jet or maybe I don't know what I'm doing well enough to tune ( my guess) the saw

I'd still check the compression in case the rings are worn out, but often when the carb can't be dialed in an air leak is to blame.

Tank leak maybe? I'll get the comp checked this weekend

No, a leak in the gas tank just causes fuel to leak out. Air leaks are more along the lines of crank bearing seals, impulse lines, various parts of the intake manifold, cylinder base gaskets...
 
Ok so I need to finish this thread. Finally found an awesome husky dealer about 30 min from the hours and had him go over the saw. The jug gasket was leaking and I had replace the fuel filter along with the gaskets . It's got the usual wear on the crank bearings and cylinder so I will run it til it quits. It's cutting very well now as long as I don't load it up too much :) . It'll be my limb and light work saw and the 361 will be wearing a 24"bar til I can afford something in the 75-90cc range
