Garn Idle Over Summertime?

Hi All:

For the first time since 17NOV2010, I am planning to burn oil for DHW over the summer and not heat with the Garn. Is there anything special anyone does to their systems, especially one with lots of water like the Garn, during the idle months?

I'll run the pumps from time to time....but any treatment to the water at all? I'll ask Mike at precision, and Dectra doesn't seem to recommend anything special in their manuals....but I thought I'd ask the brain trust.

I have oil in the tank over 5 years old now, and it is "cheap", so I thought I'd burn up what we use and top it off when the prices are "low".

Not exactly sure about your case but isn't the Garn an open system? If so I would think you should need some kind of boiler treatment. See my most recent post about Nitrates and PH since I deal most with closed systems, it may help you and I.

Bruce, I shut down for the summer last year, I did similar to the link above. This way everything is ready for Fall start-up. I did fill the tank completely so all metal inside was covered with treated water. Be sure to have a pail under the overflow when you start-up in the fall.
