If it were me and the saw was still available I would find $375 and buy that saw - after looking it over thoroughly including a compression check and pulling the muffler. Report back if you get it and pics are required.
Would the buyer allow a stranger to start pulling parts off, there are a lot of flakes on CL, no offense.

I've done it several times. When I arrive with tools in hand and look like I know what I'm doing, nobody has ever refused. There was at one time that I asked advance permission via email, and that guy took it as if I wanted to look a gift horse in the mouth, and declined. I wasn't interested if I couldn't inspect it properly, so I never went to see it. So, now I don't ask until I'm already there and they can see that I'm seriously interested and don't have two heads.

So for anyone looking into the Makita 6401 at Home Depot, I stopped there today and asked. The woman said they sell them every 3 years. They had 2 at my local store and they were both fairly new.

When I sold my 036 Pro this past winter, I actually took my tools and did it for the buyer. I pulled the muffler to show him the piston was not scored and took a compression reading. I did this because I was asking top of the market $ and wanted the buyer to see the saw was worth what I was asking as well as leave no doubt that the saw was in tip top shape when he bought it.

An update to this. He reposted it on Craigslist and it's down to 350. He called me the other day and left a message but I'm kinda turned off by this guy taking forever to respond.

I have another possible deal in the works for an 036 and also might just get fed up and go to the dealer and buy a brand new 362.

I don't really NEED the power of a 460 since I don't fell trees, I mostly cut firewood. That being said I wouldn't mind the extra power especially if it's at that price.

Hate when I can't make up my mind

Every time I cut wood, I say/think to myself. I really have the perfect saw set up.

Then I come here and read stuff like this....
I go straight to the classifieds and look for saws
044 would be nice, 460 oh my... would be nice to have. 066 and I would be set for life!!

Damn disease!!

Didn't mean to give you a hard time. Since you called it a 461 a couple of times, I thought there might be a typo in the ad's title that was leading you astray.

I bought a rebuilt 460 power head off a member at AS for $500 shipped. I figure it paid for itself by taking down a dying 25" Ash that was dropping limbs in the yard. I convinced the wife it would cost that much for someone to drop that tree so I might as well buy the 460 and do it myself haha

I got a great deal on a used 361 from my local dealer.
Rebuilt one saw out of two he had...$300.00 I was happy, still am.

I ended up with the 036 from someone else. I am loving the saw. It's probably all I need but more power is always fun!

Our wives must never meet, lest they discover we employ similar justification.

036 is a great saw. I'm down to three saws (from six), and the 036 Pro is one of them. Works well enough with a 20" bar, and is a light saber with 18" bar. I compromised, since I have miles of 20" chain loops, and just installed big felling dogs to make the 20" an effective 19".
