Mantle tv

It's no problem with an open fireplace. It's a big problem with high eff. units though. These new tvs struggle to keep cool as it is, excessive heat is a big killer of tvs!

The newer LED TV's should not emit much heat as they are much more efficient. Thus they do not need to shed as much heat. Still......heat is a killer for most electronic equipment and will hasten their demise. I'd be very careful and ensure the equipment is shielded by a good mantel so that the unit does not endure direct heat from the fire. I have my TV just to the right of my fireplace that is in my pic (older pic when it was being built). You can kinda see some wiring outlets for speakers and cable and electrical in the picture. This setup is pretty tame though compared to directly above the fireplace. Let us know if you do this and how well things perform.

As with most things, this is an issue with many variables. My mount hasn't been an issue, its a 2010 era LCD, with a full motion mount.

1.) I wouldn't worry about just the heat think of the smoke rising up when you go to reload.. although if you do it right it would be minimal, but that exposure over time wouldn't be good for it.

2.) As someone said, the angle is all wrong.. my tv would need to be about 8' to the bottom, as my mantle is up really high, and being a 70" it would be about 10' high lol...

3.) I don't think it looks good, it takes away from the actually visual appeal of the hearth... unless your talking a drywalled gas fireplace thing.

If everything is installed well then smoke should never be an issue. Not many people around here would put up with a smoked out house everytime the stove gets loaded.

No issues here for about 4 years. I can say that the top does collect a lot of dust, but otherwise no issues. Plus the TV is mounted right into the brick and that thing will never fall off.

We designed a TV a few years ago. When studying use cases, the reliability guys were horrified to see these:

No matter what, less heat exposure to the TV the better.
