Greetings all. This website is very helpful.

I just moved into a log cabin in the NC mtns that is equipped with a large, ancient wood stove insert in a stone chimney located on the outside wall of the house. I want to replace this stove with a new, more efficient EPA approved model and debated between a free standing stove on the hearth and an insert. Since my hearth is not wide enough to get the stove out in the room (only 12.5"), I have decided to go with the insert. I have also heard that an insert is better at distributing heat throughout the house. Our cabin is currently 1600 sq ft, vaulted ceiling in living room with fireplace, open kitchen in same room, two upstreams bedrooms connected to living area via a open loft, and one downstairs bed and bathroom down the hall. No central heat, just the stove, one monitor heater and baseboard in every room that I never plan to use.

Anyways, based on local availability and some research, I am leaning towards the Regency I2400 insert. It seems very efficient at 77% with a decent BTU output (75K). From what I have read, it has the same BTU rating as their large insert (I3100) so I don't know why I would need that one.

I am curious if any of you have experience with the Regency inserts. The reviews on here seem to all be positive. I just wanted a little more feedback before I take the plunge. Any alternate suggestions would be appreciated.

I plan on lining my chimney with a 6" SS flex liner. Looks like I will need to cut a larger opening in the flue plate. Then I need to decide whether to insulate or not.

This is a fine stove with several happy owners. There are equivalents, but if you have a great dealer that sells only Regency then that's ok. In its size range there is also the mid-sized Pacific Energy and Quadrafire stoves that are also very nice. With the exterior chimney, you'll need to insulate the liner, so best budget for it now. It will make the stove work a lot better and will keep that flue cleaner.

I'm quite happy with mine but being on the west coast, our climate is quite mild. I have a 5.5" flex liner on mine and it drafts well (25' interior chimney) I'm not sure if going with a 5.5" liner would save you any money.

The Regency is a fabulous stove and the airwarsh on theirs is as good as I've seen. They are well built machines and their current promo (thru Dec 14) for a free fan makes them a great value. Make sure you come to Black Mountain and have a look as we have many models that you may be unaware of.

We have something in common as I too have a log home in the 1600 to 1800 sf area. I had a heatilator fireplace when I bought the house and it didn't heat anything more than 5 feet away. I bought a Appalachian insert and it also didn't or doesn't really heat much more than the area close to it.

So I went to what you would call my local dealer as he is about 75 miles away and he felt me buying a Regency I3100 would do the trick and it is to be installed this coming Wednesday. I cant wait and I get tired of putting wood in and not getting much out of the Appalachian.

I can give you a more detailed report next week if your interested in my opinion.

I look forward to your report. I hope it works out for you. Are you installing a chimney liner as well?

Yes I am getting a liner as that was part of my price quote. I had a partial liner installed when I had my sweep install the Appalachian. He didn't tell me why he only put in the partial, so other than trying to save me money I don't know.

I don't know if the new liner will be insulated as I am reading on the board so till they get here next week I don't know what I am getting. I did pay cash as the dealer told me I could save around 5% doing it that way, so I am looking forward to next Wednesday as I am tired of putting in wood and getting nothing in return.

Will give a report Wednesday night after the install and cross your fingers.lol
